Only Rs 1.74 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) has been received in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.
According to the monthly report of Nepal Rastra Bank, FDI inflows amounted to Rs 1.748 billion in Shrawan-Asoj. This is only 5 percent of the foreign investment commitments in the first quarter. According to the Department of Industry, foreign investment commitments of Rs 35.1377 billion have been received in three months.
Stakeholders also say that while approving foreign investment, the government allows investors to invest in phases (in installments). Government officials also say that the commitment and approved amount are not received at once.
According to the department, investment commitments of Rs 24.10 billion were received in Shrawan. The department stated that only Rs 8.98 billion and Rs 2.4 billion were received in Bhadra and Ashoj, respectively. The foreign investment commitments have decreased due to the protests on Bhadra 23 and 24.
There is no significant difference in the inflow of foreign investment. The National Bank has stated that foreign investment inflows amounted to Rs 691.5 million in Shrawan, Rs 581.9 million in Bhadra and Rs 467.4 million in Asoj.
In the same period of the last fiscal year, foreign investment commitments amounted to Rs 16.44 billion. In the same period, the National Bank has stated that investment inflows amounted to Rs 4.81 billion.
