The number of foreigners visiting Chitwan National Park has decreased slightly in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. However, due to the increase in the number of domestic tourists, there has been an improvement in the number of visitors to the park despite adverse conditions.
The number of people visiting Chitwan did not decrease significantly even during the protests of Bhadaai 23 and 24 and the floods and landslides during Dashain-Tihar.
According to Chitwan National Park Information Officer and Conservation Officer Avinash Thapa, 67,735 people visited Chitwan National Park from Shrawan to Kartik. Last year, the number of tourists visiting the park during this period was 63,028. But the park's statistics show that the number of domestic tourists visiting the park has increased compared to last year and the number of foreigners has decreased.
According to the park's statistics, 24,692 foreigners, 3,345 from SAARC countries and 39,698 Nepalis have visited here from Shrawan to Kartik. Last year, the number of foreigners visiting the park during this period was 29,061. Similarly, 5,821 SAARC countries and 28,146 domestic tourists visited Chitwan National Park.
In the first quarter of this year, 4,369 foreign tourists and 2,476 domestic tourists visited the park less than last year. The number of domestic tourists visiting the park is 11,549 more than last year from Shrawan to Kartik, indicating an improvement in the total number of tourists.
Asoj and Kartik are the times when both domestic and foreign tourists visit. But last year and this year too, tourists were affected by the floods and landslides that began after Asoj. This year, the tourism sector was badly affected by the Genji movement and destructive activities such as vandalism and arson on Bhadra 23 and 24.
Tourism entrepreneurs are not excited as the number of tourist arrivals has not been good even in Kartik, when the most tourists visit Chitwan National Park. Om Pandey, president of the Regional Hotel Association (HAN) Chitwan Sauraha, an organization of tourist hotels, said that foreign tourists have canceled bookings in droves after the Genji movement. ‘The booking rate was 70 to 90 percent. Many canceled. That is why the number of foreign tourists is low,’ he said.
Tourism was also affected during Dashain when rains and floods closed the main highway. The main tourist areas near the park, including Sauraha, were full for two/three days of Tihar, which gave some relief to tourism entrepreneurs.
Chitwan National Park is the first destination for tourists to observe wildlife. Up to three lakh tourists from home and abroad come here every year to see rare animals like the one-horned rhinoceros and tigers.
