Coupon distribution has been postponed indefinitely after farmers' crowds became uncontrollable at the Food and Management Trade Center in Rajapur.
Farmers had been standing in line since 2 am to get coupons to be distributed to 30 people by the food trade center. The crowd became uncontrollable after a large number of farmers arrived by 7 am, according to the food trade center.
Center chief Kamal Pandey said that the token system has been suspended indefinitely as the crowd could not be managed. 'Coupons were distributed to 30 farmers who were in line since morning, but it was not known whether they were farmers or not. The coupon distribution was stopped after they started vandalizing the main gate of the food trade center,' he said. The food trade center has set a quota to purchase 30,000 quintals of rice this year.
Farmer Hari Prasad Tharu of Rajapur-1 said that he had been standing in line for coupons since 2 am. Bardiya produces about 2.25 lakh quintals of rice. He complained that the government had to sell other rice to traders at a cheap price while setting a quota to purchase 30,000 quintals. 'Neither fertilizers are available on time nor do farmers have the courage to sell rice,' he said.
Farmers are demanding that the government increase the quota for paddy procurement. The center has been purchasing paddy since last November 19. The center has stated that it has purchased about 10,000 quintals till Saturday. This year, the food center has established paddy procurement depots in Gulariya, Shantibazaar and Jayajagar besides Rajapur. This year, the government has fixed the price of coarse paddy at Rs 3,463.81 and fine paddy at Rs 3,628.33.
