Negotiations initiated to resolve the dispute that arose after Taragaun Regency Hotels Limited (Hotel Hyatt Regency), which is also invested by the Government of Nepal, decided to lay off workers and employees, failed to reach a conclusion on Thursday.

The negotiation meeting, which began after the management announced its decision to cut workers on Tuesday, was intended to sign a comprehensive bilateral agreement between the three major political parties active in the hotel-restaurant sector, close labor organizations, and the hotel management. However, the talks ended incompletely after some issues could not be agreed upon in the final stage, a participating source informed.

The hotel has been closed since Bhadra 24 following the arson and vandalism during the Genji movement. Stating that it would take at least a year for reconstruction, the management on Tuesday issued a notice of all labor cuts effective from Mangsir 25. Trade unions have been demanding that labor be managed in accordance with existing laws against the decision.

The unions have demanded that all workers be returned to work after the hotel reopens, that the minimum wage be ensured as per the Labor Act during the closure period, and that the exact details of the damage caused by the arson be made public. They also demanded clarity on why the fire could not be controlled despite the availability of sufficient water in an emergency, why there was a delay in rescuing the guests in the rooms, why all the guests were not rescued at once through an announcement, and why the necessary emergency practices were not adopted in the international chain hotels, the participating labor leaders said.

General Manager Ashish Kumar, company secretary Geeta Dahal, and PR manager Gopal Bahadur Bhandari were present from the hotel in the talks. On the workers' side, Congress-affiliated Trade Union President Keshar Shrestha and Vice President Rajendra Khadka, UML-affiliated Trade Union President Dilli Prasad Bajgain and Secretary Harisharan Dhakal, and Maoist-affiliated Hotel Trade Union President Khil Koirala and Secretary Bishwaraj Khadka participated.

Although the UML and Maoist sides appeared positive towards the proposal presented by the management based on the demands of the workers, the Congress-affiliated trade union was disagreeing on some points, said Bajgain, UML-affiliated Trade Union President. According to him, before the Genji movement, the hotel employed 143 permanent, about 200 contract and about 150 daily wage workers. He informed that the management has already dismissed 16 foreign employees, including General Manager Ashish Kumar, after the movement.
