A sudden power outage on the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) affected all flight operations on Saturday evening, at around 5:25 pm. According to airport sources, it is believed that the power outage occurred due to water entering the runway due to incessant rain.

The electrical department staff is continuing to try to find the fault. According to initial information, the 'edge light' on the edge of the runway has been found to be shorted.

After the electrical short, the planes of Fly Dubai from Dubai, Qatar Airways from Doha, and Korean Air from Korea have been put on hold in the sky above Simara. Similarly, the ATR plane of Buddha Air from Janakpur on the domestic side is also on hold in Simara.

However, the passenger pressure at the airport has increased due to the absence of flights from Kathmandu.

The runway of Tribhuvan Airport is about 3,350 meters long. The runway is currently dark and the airport has stated that maintenance work is underway at an accelerated pace.

Meanwhile, the Korean Air plane has been diverted to New Delhi from the sky above Simara instead of Kathmandu due to fuel shortage due to prolonged hold.

Similarly, a Buddha Air flight coming from Janakpur towards the interior has also returned there.
