The Dynamic Democratic Party has emphasized the need to restructure Nepali Airlines to attract tourists to the country through the aviation sector.

The party has pointed out that the restructuring of the air service is necessary to make the Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, including the infrastructure, operational as the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, cannot handle the flight pressure.

The party presented its long-term vision by making its first concept public in Bhairahawa on Thursday. Party member and executive chairman of Buddha Air Birendra Bahadur Basnet said that the party has made public its first concept related to increasing tourism from Bhairahawa after seeing the option of bringing in a large number of tourists from Gautam Buddha International Airport. 'There is the potential for wide-body aircraft to fly to the US from Bhairahawa,' he said, 'Qatar Airways has already confirmed this by flying last year.'

He said that since the airports in Bhairahawa and New Delhi, India, are similar, all aircraft flying from Delhi can fly from Bhairahawa. For that, he said that restructuring of Nepal's aviation sector is necessary.

‘Nepal Airlines should now be taken to a public company,’ he said, ‘The government should keep 30 percent shares and give the rest to the public.’ Stating that they will remove Nepal Airlines from the blacklist within three months of receiving the responsibility, he said that the government should be held responsible for that. ‘Now the nation should attract 5 million tourists in 10 years at the rate of 500,000 per year,’ he said, ‘That will create 3 million jobs in the country.’

He said that 50 A350-1000 aircraft are needed for the restructuring of the airline sector. He said that it is possible to purchase the aircraft through lease financing, but initially Rs 25 billion would be required.

He said that the target of bringing in tourists cannot be met unless Nepal Airlines is restructured. He said that at least 6 flights can be operated from Bhairahawa Airport in an hour. ‘Gautam Buddha Airport cannot be left to waste,’ he said. ‘If the government takes responsibility for the restructuring, we can transform it within 4 to 6 months.’

According to him, 2.4 million people are currently entering Kathmandu from Tribhuvan International Airport annually. Of these, 1.3 million are Nepali.

Of the 1.1 million who enter as tourists, most are non-resident Nepalis. The party has stated that only 7-8 million tourists enter Kathmandu annually.
