Everest Rolling Mill, which has been consuming electricity through dedicated and trunk lines, has paid the premium tariff arrears to the Nepal Electricity Authority. The industry, which operates in the Bhairahawa area, paid the first installment of the arrears on Wednesday.

The power lines of the disconnected industries were reconnected after the first installment was paid, informed Rajan Dhakal, spokesperson of the NEA.

The industries were yet to pay the premium for the use of dedicated and trunk lines from 2072 Magh to 2075 Baisakh. The NEA has stated that Everest Rolling Mill has an arrears of about Rs 1.7 million and the amount has been divided into 28 installments. The industries have paid the first installment.

However, the industrialists have been claiming that the amount paid to the NEA is not an installment but a 'deposit'. The NEA has stated that there has been no formal agreement on this.

The NEA had cut off the power supply of 23 industries since Kartik 40. Of these, 13 industries are still without power. Two out of a total of 25 industries had already closed.

The power lines were reconnected in the middle of Tihar after Goenka Foods and Gharana Foods paid the installments. After that, four industries paid the installments on Monday, three on Tuesday and one more on Wednesday.

A middle-of-the-road proposal was put forward to resolve the dedicated and trunk line arrears dispute during a discussion held on Monday between Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal, Energy Minister Kulman Ghising, Industry, Commerce and Supplies Minister Anil Sinha, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal and Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry President Chandra Prasad Dhakal.

During the discussion, it was reported that the industrialists would pay the amount equivalent to the first of the 28 installments as a deposit, not as an ‘installment’ but as a ‘disputed amount’, and the power line would be connected immediately, and then proceed through review, appeal and judicial processes.
