The Department of Tourism confirmed on Sunday evening that one foreign climber had died and two others were missing during two separate mountaineering expeditions this autumn.
According to the Department of Tourism, Australian citizen Shin Turk Chan, who had gone as a team leader on the Himlung Expedition from ATK International Company, has died.
He died after falling into a crevasse at an altitude of about 6,100 meters on Kartik 15 while returning from Himlung Himal (7,126 m), the department said. Efforts are being made to rescue the body of the deceased and continuous coordination is ongoing with the relevant agencies.
Similarly, in another incident, two Italian citizens Farronato Stefano and Caputo Alessandro have been missing since Kartik 15, 2082 while climbing Panwari Himal (6,885 m), the department said.
Due to bad weather in the Himalayas, contact could not be made with them and a search operation is underway in coordination with the relevant climbing agencies and local bodies for rescue, said the department's director Himal Gaitam.
The Department of Tourism has stated that it is closely monitoring both incidents and is continuously collaborating with the concerned agencies for rescue and management of the bodies.
