Nepal Electricity Authority has received approval for the renewal of the 282.61 MW electricity export permit. The Central Electricity Authority, under the Ministry of Power of India, on Wednesday renewed the approval given to export 282.61 MW of electricity generated from eight different hydropower projects in Nepal.
The NEA is selling the surplus electricity consumed within the country at competitive rates in the day-head and real-time markets of the Indian Power Exchange (IEX) and to the states of Haryana and Bihar as per the bilateral medium-term power sales agreements.
Electricity is also being exported to Bangladesh using India's transmission infrastructure. Four projects that were approved to sell electricity at competitive rates in the Indian Power Exchange (IEX) market have been renewed.
The approval for the sale of 103 MW of electricity generated by the projects to IEX had expired on different dates. The export of all projects has been renewed for about one year with effect from last Tuesday. The export permits of the 24.25 MW Upper Dordi A, 19.4 MW Lower Modi, 24.25 MW Kabeli B-1 and 34.92 MW Upper Balefi hydropower projects have been renewed.
As per the bilateral agreement, about 180% of the electricity generated by 4 projects was being sold to the state of Haryana. The permission given to sell to the state of Haryana expires on Thursday (today).
The authority sells electricity to Haryana between June and October every year. The authority had sought permission to sell electricity from the projects that have been given permission to sell electricity to Haryana in IX as well. The Central Electricity Authority of India has approved the proposal. Now, electricity generated by the 4 projects will be able to be sold continuously in IX from Friday.
According to the authority, the permission of the 50.89 MW Likhu-2, 80 MW Lower Solu, 28.2 MW Likhu Khola A and 20.7 MW Tholu Khola hydropower projects has been renewed.
During his visit to New Delhi, India to attend the 8th meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghisingh had urged India's Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to simplify the process of approving electricity exports.
He also urged Nepal to immediately approve the proposal sent for renewal as it is the best time for electricity generation in Nepal.
