Two industries in Jagadamba, owned by Shankar Group, have been shut down after the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) cut off electricity for non-payment of premium charges for consuming electricity through dedicated feeders and trunk lines. Jagadamba Steel and Jagadamba Synthetic have been cut off for non-payment of dues of Rs 1.6 billion and Rs 205 million, respectively.

Sulabh Agrawal, vice-chairman of Shankar Group, said that both industries were closed after putting employees on leave. Jagdamba Steel has 2,200 employees, while Jagdamba Synthetic has 600 employees.

'We have put all employees on leave now. We have not said anything about salary allowances,' he said, 'If the shutdown is only for a short time, salary allowances can be given. If the industry remains closed for a long time, a decision will be made at that time.'

According to Agrawal, Jagdamba Steel has been producing 80,000 tons of steel monthly and Synthetic  200 tons of yarn, etc. monthly.

'The authority has not been able to provide proof that we have consumed excess electricity, if it does, we will pay the arrears,' Agrawal said, 'How can we pay the electricity bill that we have not used?'

The Nepal Electricity Authority has cut the electricity lines of 25 industries across the country, saying that they have not paid the additional premium fee after consuming electricity from dedicated feeders and trunk lines. This situation has arisen after the NEA cut off electricity to 6 industries on Kartik 4 and 18 more on Kartik 7.

In addition, the NEA has stated that Everest Paper Mill has already cut off electricity since it has not paid its monthly electricity bill and the industry itself is closed.
