Production at the country's largest Reliance Spinning Mills, located in Khanar, Itahari Sub-metropolitan City-12, Sunsari, has been halted for a week after the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) cut off the power line for non-payment of dedicated feeder and trunkline dues. The authority cut off the power line to the industry on Kartik 4.
Reliance Spinning Mills, which was started in 2051, employs over 3500 workers. The industry, which has a state-of-the-art plant, has been producing over 100 tons of yarn daily. The company has said that the industry is exporting yarn from Turkey to Japan. The industry, which is always bustling, is deserted after the power outage. ‘It is not possible to operate the industry after the power outage,’ said industry manager Mahesh Pokharel. ‘Until power is restored, the industry cannot operate.’
The authority has cut the power line, saying that there is a debt of Rs 750 million. ‘A bill of Rs 750 million has been forcibly imposed on us,’ said industry manager Pokharel. ‘We were paying Rs 60 million monthly, but now we have to live in the dark.’
The company has said that 3500 workers have been put on ‘leave’ after the industry came to a standstill. Exports have also come to a standstill due to lack of production. ‘We were paying a monthly electricity bill of Rs 60 million.
