A dozen complaints have been registered with the commission formed to investigate the incidents of 23 and 24 Bhadra as of Sunday. According to the commission, two private sector companies have registered complaints with details of the damage. One of them is Bhatbhateni Supermarket.
Bhatbhateni has filed a complaint claiming damages of more than Rs 11 billion. Bhatbhateni has stated that 20 stores were damaged, including 12 that were completely destroyed. It is claimed that more than Rs 500 million worth of goods were stolen and vandalized to the point of being unusable.
Bhatbhateni has claimed that all the burned stores were initially looted and set on fire. ‘The protesters who entered the department store initially looted. They also stole items that they could easily take away. Some footage of the looters was initially recorded on CCTV cameras,’ the complaint states. ‘There were some locals and many outsiders in the looting. Some of the protesters were even wearing masks. After the sudden looting and large crowd, we could not keep any records. We just ran to save our lives.’
It is claimed that the looting in some stores was planned. ‘It seems that the burning was planned. Theft, arson and vandalism have occurred in all stores in the same pattern,' the complaint states, 'involving people from different groups and people who are skilled in criminal activities rather than any one group or individual.' The complaint states that 12 of the 19 stores in Bhatbhateni, which were completely damaged and 9 partially damaged, suffered damage to goods worth 4.4 billion 654 thousand 603 rupees and physical damage worth 6.96 billion 3 lakh rupees. The complaint claims that more than 500 million rupees worth of goods were stolen and vandalized to the point of being unusable.
