What you should know

Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kulman Ghising has said that roads blocked due to incessant rain will be put into operation as soon as possible. There are alternative road sections of blocked roads and highways and he requested to use those roads for the time being.

In a press conference held at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport on Sunday, he said that although there was some physical damage due to the disaster, there was no major human loss due to the preparedness of the government. He said that due to adequate notification and preparedness, the damage was reduced.

According to Ghising, there was no major human loss due to the settlement near the river being washed away, drowned or the road collapsed. "More than 300 people living on the banks of the river in the valley were kept in school on Saturday night," he said, "while they were not allowed to come out." However, since it is raining in the eastern region of Nepal, the road sections there will be put into operation only after the rain subsides, he said. "The economic damage of the road infrastructure is yet to be ascertained," he said, "now we are opening the road." Day and night repair work is going on intensively in the blocked sections of major highways. We express our commitment to bring the rest of the roads into operation as soon as possible," the statement issued by the ministry states, "Since yesterday, by mobilizing machines and manpower, the Prithvi Highway and Narayangadh-Muglin Highway leading from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Narayangadh through West-Muglin and Narayangadh-Muglin Highway have been removed. Vijay Jaisi, director general of the department said. He said that the plan is to bring the road into operation within a week at most after the flow of water subsides. But Minister Ghising gave instructions to start the operation before that.

The road department has informed that there is no disruption in the traffic operation on the Prithvi Highway and Narayangadh-Muglin road from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Narayangadh via West Muglin. The department says that the west side roads which were closed due to rain will be opened and the repair work of various roads damaged by the disaster will be done at a fast pace.

Minister Ghising said that due to continuous heavy rains and climate-related events from Friday to Sunday, landslides and floods occurred in various parts of the country, blocking roads and greatly affecting traffic.

"We are mobilizing the necessary manpower and equipment in the affected areas and are speeding up the repair work day and night in the blocked sections of major highways," he said. The department said that the repair and opening of roads has been accelerated in coordination with the local administration, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Traffic Police and local bodies.

According to the department, Nagadhunga-Muglin, Narayangadh-Butwal, Muglin-Narayangadh, Siddharth Highway and Tribhuvan Rajpath have been put into operation till 2 pm on Sunday. According to the department, one-way operation is being carried out on the Khawa road section under the Araniko highway and the work is continuing.

Kanti Lokpath is also being cleaned due to a general landslide. Maikhola Bridge, Puwa Khola Belibridge and Jogmai Belibridge under the Mechi highway have been flooded. The department has said that it will take some time to put it into operation as it is raining.
