Crisis in tourism season

Nepal's tourism market has been affected due to Gen-G movement. Ramechhap airport is deserted at the moment. If it had not been for the Zen-Gi movement, the scene today would have been completely different. Through daily 20-22 flights of Tara, Summit and Sita Air, hundreds of tourists used to reach Lukla from Ramechhap and trek up to Everest base camp. But now there are no ships or passengers on the runway.

Manoj Karki, President of the Domestic Airline Operators Association, says, 'Now we are sending the plane to Ramechhap only on the day after Dasain Tika.'

The Pokhara-Jomsom flight had been resumed before the Zen-G movement. Muktinath area used to be crowded with Indian pilgrims during this season. But now the planes are not Pokhara-Jomsom, but Nepalgunj-Karnali.

The above story of Lukla, the gateway to Mt. and Mustang, the district of Himalpari, clearly shows how Nepal's tourism industry has been affected after the Gen-G movement. From foreign tourists to Lukla to Indian pilgrims to Muktinath, everyone is affected .

The income of local hoteliers, guides and porters has dropped to zero . Tourist-dependent areas like Ramechhap and Jomsom have today turned into empty and deserted markets. The demands raised by the Gen-Ji movement and its justification can be a separate topic . But its direct impact has shaken Nepal's tourism economy. Now the question arises, how long will this crisis last? And, how long will it take for the tourist destinations to return to their old rhythm?'

According to Karki, who is also the managing director of Summit Air, which is the leader in long-distance flights, if the Cathay Pacific flight that was stopped from August 30th to bring tourists to Nepal resumes its old rhythm after October 15th, Nepal and the countries that are restricting visas for Nepalis will not push the next tourist season like last year if they withdraw their decision. However, the Nepalese government needs to spread the message that Nepal is safe for tourists, says Sagar Pandey, president of the umbrella organization of trekking traders.

'World Tourism Day, which is celebrated around the world on Saturday, has arrived at our doorstep. Today's Zen-G movement came/went like a tsunami. There are not many days.,' President Pandey, who is leading the organization of businessmen related to about 1700 marches, said, 'On this occasion, Prime Minister Sushila Karki should announce that Nepal is safe by holding a huge program with the ambassadors of various countries in Nepal.' Businessmen have said that the government should soon control and publicize the official opinion that the law has been implemented.

``Asoj/Kartik (October) is the season for half of the total number of tourists who visit Nepal,'' Kumarmani Thapalia, president of Natta, the umbrella organization of tour and travel companies, said, ``Nowadays, the businessmen are saying that bookings are being stopped in hotels, tours, travel, airlines . However, tourists from abroad are surprised by the news that peace was established and the government was formed soon after the protests in Nepal . Many people have not canceled their trip to Nepal but put it on hold. Therefore, it was seen that the Prime Minister should address that Nepal is safe. On the other hand, the message that the government quickly returned the weapons stolen from the police should also be effective.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 14,000 prisoners/detainees came out of the prison after Gen-ji's protest. As of Tuesday, at least 8,000 have returned to prison. Similarly, around 1,200 weapons were destroyed/disappeared from police offices across the country including Kathmandu. President of Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) Vinayak Shah said that if the government publishes a positive opinion about prisoners/detainees and weapons soon, the message that Nepal is safe will be sent to the world tourism market.

'Our hotels, restaurants are safe . It has come into operation," President Shah said, "Now Nepal's diplomatic missions abroad, unpaid embassies and non-resident Nepalis should convey the message that Nepal is safe. We have said this on Sunday in a meeting with Prime Minister Karki, Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal, Energy Minister Kulman Ghising and Home Minister Omprakash Aryal and Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal. Of these, about 70,000 Harahari go on a walk in October (Azoj-Kartik) and April (Chait/Vaisakh). ``In Nepal, some people walk somewhere during the Brahmi month padayatra . But October is considered the main season by trekkers,' said TAN president Sagar Pandey, 'After the agitation in Nepal, traders in our sector have predicted 5 to 10 percent impact.' Regarding hotels, there are 1 lakh 42 hotel businesses across Nepal. Among these, 186 hotels ranging from 1 star to 5 stars appear in the government data.

The remaining 1130 tourist level hotels are in Pokhara, Kathmandu, Jomsom, Lukla and other areas. The protest affected Hilton, Varnabas and Hyatt hotels. Han said that all the hotels except these hotels have been put into operation.

According to Mingma Sherpa, the president of Seven Summit Treks Pvt. Ltd., who has done the most mountain climbing in Nepal, there has been news of a few booking postponements in mountain climbing. "Last year, I managed 250 foreigners to climb the mountains including Everest," said Mingma, "this time it will not be less than 200". As the main season is in March-April, it seems that the general election scheduled to be held at that time will not affect the climbing. Nepal's tourism has not been destroyed. We are hopeful.'

In a discussion with Prime Minister Karki, Natta President Kumarmani Thapalia said that the tourism sector needs a special relief package. He said that he made such a demand in the discussion program organized by the Prime Minister with associations and organizations in the commercial and tourism sector.

'Security concerns have also affected international air services . Recently, Cathay Pacific Airlines suspended its service in Nepal citing security reasons. This has directly affected the passengers,' he said to the Prime Minister, 'We should take the harsh decision regarding visas and some countries have started issuing travel advisories against Nepal seriously and find a solution soon.' A concrete message that Nepal is safe should be given to the international community," said President Thapalia, "only in this way will contribute to the revival of Nepal's tourism." According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the highest number of foreign tourists came to Nepal in 2019 before the Corona infection. Nepal ranks 15th in the number of tourist arrivals in the world. India, United States of America, China, Bangladesh and UK are the top 5 countries that have the highest number of tourists in Nepal.
