After the Rasuwagadhi crossing was completely closed on June 24 due to floods, the trade with China by land route was 'diverted'. At present, Tatopani is the only option for trade coming through the northern border with China.
But due to a landslide at a place called 'Iko' on the Bahrbise-Tatopani section of the road connecting the Tatopani section of the Araniko highway, traffic has been operating only for four days in a month . The landslide is about 2 km from the Liping Miteri bridge towards Kathmandu and 4 km from the customs gate towards the border . Even if dozers are used day after day to open traffic on the road, the possibility is decreasing.
Due to the closure of transportation, there has been a direct impact on business transactions, markets and consumers. Tatopani Customs has become deserted as dozens of containers of goods have to be imported daily in the run-up to Dasain. Due to the closure of Rasuwa, it was estimated that the import from Tatopani will double this time . But this time, since the goods brought for Dasain could not be brought to the federal capital, it is almost certain that there will be a shortage throughout the country.
On the one hand, the rain has made it difficult to open the road, on the other hand, the locals have protested saying that the village is about to flood. Locals have asked to work only after the rain stops on Thursday . Due to this, there is a possibility that the goods imported by the traders after spending crores of rupees will not be sold . The traders have sent the goods brought to Kathmandu to different cities. But even though Dasain is approaching, goods worth crores are still stuck on the road. The traders who import those goods into Nepal are confused.
It has been brought from China goods such as clothes, shoes, bags, toys, ornaments and electrical goods. Especially, most of the low to middle-class families have been using Chinese-made clothes and shoes during Dasain. Since goods are imported according to the purchasing power of Nepalese, Chinese goods are also used a lot. But this year, two months have passed without receiving the goods.
Now traders are carrying perishable goods including food items and bringing them into Nepal . Traders say that when such goods are imported, the transportation cost of one container of fruits will increase by about one lakh. Apples and spices have started to rot. Apples, walnuts, mangoes, kiwi, garlic and other rotten and perishable goods are coming from China.
Importer Sharda Prasad Parajuli said that fruit boxes are unloaded from containers and taken to customs through porters. Even if it is carried like this, the possibility of fruit damage and injury will be the same . He said that the road is not easy even for pedestrians at the place where the landslide occurred. Now, hundreds of people in the border area are engaged in carrying fruit boxes.
Since it is uncertain whether the road will be operational, now not only fruits but ready-made clothes and other goods have to be brought to the warm dry port by porters. Chairman of Sindhupalchok Chamber of Commerce and Industry and businessman of the northern border, Buddharaj Basnet, said that if the goods brought for Dasain cannot be brought into Nepal even if the porters are carried, they will not reach the consumers . He said that since Dasain is approaching, if this situation continues, it is almost certain that the goods will get stuck on the way.
After the closure of Rasuwa border, now more than 1,500 containers are stranded in Kerung, Sigatse, Lhasa, Khasa and border roads in China. More than 600 goods are stored in warehouses in Kerung alone. Since the road from Tatopani is not reliable, the businessmen are confused about how to enter Nepal. Some have chosen the sea route and brought goods from the Terai border through the Indian border. But because it takes a long time for transportation, it is practically difficult . According to
President Basnet, traffic operations have become uncertain due to the landslide in the Kodari section of Tatopani on the Araniko Highway. Although there is a landslide removal work under the leadership of Road Division Office Charikot with the help of local businessmen, it has become difficult to operate traffic due to incessant rain.
As Bhotekoshi pulls from the lower demand and the land in the upper part flows, the possibility of the road being operated until the rains stop is minimal . Chairman Basnet says, 'The locals are also putting pressure on the construction of the road below the settlement, worrying about the destruction of their houses.
"It was built the previous day, and the next day there is no sign of the road," the technicians of the division office say, "It was built today, it will be destroyed tomorrow." It became difficult to work . In this situation, it is difficult to operate the road until the rain stops.'
Tatopani Chief Customs Officer Rajendra Prasad Chudal says that he is ready to pass the customs check if the transport company takes responsibility and brings the goods. He said that it is not as easy as expected to bring 'commercial goods' to the customs yard in the right way and easily with the porter. He says that he is talking to the higher authorities as far as he can to open the road. "I did what I had to do." But my position and field of work cannot be decisive in opening the road. Nothing else can be done except to take the initiative,' said Chief of Customs Chudal.
Sujit Basnet, Vice President of Nepal Himalayan Cross Border Commerce Association, says that it is not easy to cross the landslide by carrying the goods of many importers in one container. It is possible if the transport company that brings the goods from China brings them to the customs, otherwise it is not an easy way. It has many complications," said Vice President Basnet.
Businessmen say that it is not easy for the porter to bring the poka-poka goods in the container as they are imported by different people. They say that they cannot cross the landslide as some goods cannot be carried.
