081 The flood that occurred in October caused major damage to the BP highway. 8 km road was completely washed away. As a result, the road connection was broken for those going east through this highway. Passengers who were ready to go home on the eve of Dasain were disappointed. They were forced to take two days to reach a place that could be reached in one day using an alternative route. Some even canceled their journey home because of the road.
Now that another Daisy is approaching, travelers are interested again - how will the BP highway journey be this time?
The road that collapsed before Dasai last year has not been built even in a year. Lack of budget and lengthy contracting process took time, resulting in permanent work not starting . Currently, out of 30.5 km, only 25 km have been contracted, the rest of the contract has not yet been signed.
The permanent road structure has not been built yet, will the passengers have to suffer to go home this time too? Suman Yogesh, head of road division Bhaktapur, says that there is no problem so far, small floods and landslides do not stop traffic.
According to him, if there is a contract agreement, the builders are deployed with machines to open the roads that have been flooded and landslides. "More than 3,000 vehicles pass through this highway every day," he said.
The operation of passenger and private vehicles on the highway has been banned from July 1st from 5 pm to 5 am. Due to the risk of landslides due to rains, passenger transport has been stopped and this process will continue until the middle of August, Road Division Office Bhaktapur said.
A two-lane road is going to be constructed under the said highway from Bhakundebensi to Nepal Thok in the 30.5 km area damaged by the flood. At present, three packages, two for Kavre and one for Sindhuli, have been signed. Lama-Nav Kantipur JV has taken the contract of 11 km section from Bhakundebensi to Charsaybensi and has been mobilized at the construction site . The contract has been signed for 1 billion 14 million rupees excluding VAT.
A contract of 9 km distance from Charsaybensi to Dalabensi has been signed with Kani-Kamaljit-Awan JV for 1 billion 22 crore rupees excluding VAT . Both the contracts were signed last June and the road department said that the work should be completed within two years from the date of the contract. Chief Yogesh said that permanent construction work will start only after monsoon.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will work on the 5 km section of this highway. JICA will construct a 3.2 km road from Pipley to Barkhe Khola. For that, the final survey work has been completed. Chief Yogesh said that the maintenance work of this section will be done under the Bhaktapur Division until the contract is signed.
"The design of this section is being finalized after the completion of the survey," he said, "so the contract will be awarded only after December." Despite the late contract, the road department says that the work done by Japan will make the vehicle operable by July 2027. BP Highway currently has an intermediate lane, now it will become a two lane.
Road Division Bhaktapur said that the contract for the 2.3 km section from Piple to Dalabensi was called and the economic and technical evaluation is under way. "Within the next 15 days, the contract for this section will be signed," Chief Yogesh said. The 5 km section from Barkhe Khola to Nepal Thok falls in Sindhuli district. The contract of the said section was taken by Kharidhunga-Ghisingh-Khistij JV . The contract amount excluding VAT is Rs 55 crore. The contract was signed in the second week of June of this section.
Parasmani Hamal, Head of Road Division, Khalte, Sindhuli, said that the company that will take the contract in that section has been mobilized at the construction site. "Chadwad has come, there is no problem in Sindhuli section so far," he said, "only if there is a big future, otherwise the road will be easy in Chadwad."
If the road is blocked due to flood or rain in the 25 km section where the contract has been signed, the company taking the contract has taken responsibility for opening the road after maintenance . The road department said that arrangements have been made for engineers and sub-engineers to stay in the field throughout the summer. For the permanent construction and maintenance of BP Highway, Road Division Bhaktapur has been provided Rs 7.50 crore and Khurkot section Rs 1 billion.
