Chaldi river is sighing so that it can be heard in the fields. But the farmers have not been able to plant paddy in Isma Rural Municipality-2 Chaldiphant of Gulmi.
Due to the drought, the suffering of the farmers in most places of Tarai Madhesh for planting is different from the suffering of the farmers of Chaldiphant.
Farmers have not been able to plant paddy on the banks of the flowing river due to lack of irrigation facilities in the area across the river Chaldi. Farmers have planted paddy in this area after rainwater has accumulated in the field or after the root has broken in the corner of the field. The distance between the river and the field is not so much, but the high and low places are causing problems for the farmers. At one time, the water of the river came to the farm from the valley, but as the river gradually deepened, the height of the farm increased.
Due to insufficient rainfall this year, 300 seedlings of 60 farmers in Chaldiphant have not been planted in the fields. Tika Reshmi, a leading farmer, said that even though the Chaldi river was flowing nearby, there was no paddy planting in the neighboring fields. "Planting has not started until now when the sky is full of water," he said, "The dam has been washed away several times, now we are thinking of pulling it with a motor." Another farmer, Tek Bahadur Nepali, complained that the planting could not be done because it did not rain and the nearby water could not be taken to the fields. He said, "There is a problem of water when planting the seeds, so the seeds are also washed," he said. "Earlier, planting was done from the kulo, we didn't have to wait for rain," he said, "the river gradually opened up and went down, the kulo was not protected."
The farmers of Chaldiphant are in trouble when the roots do not burst due to rain. Not only Reshmi and Nepali, 60 farmers including Purna Shrestha, Yadav Pandey, Jung Bahadur Khatri and Bishnu Khatri are worried about not planting rice on time. Although it is said to build Chaldikhola dam for irrigation, after repeated failures, farmers are thinking of using electric motor to deliver water to the fields. They are in the process of pulling the water from Chaldi river to the fields by motor before it rains for some time.
Information Officer of Agricultural Knowledge Center, Shiv Prasad Banjade, said that till Thursday, 83 percent of paddy had been planted. He said that other than the fields where corn and rice are cultivated, they have been planted elsewhere. In Gulmi, chaite paddy is 319 hectares and spring paddy is 7,120 plants. Varieties of paddy including Ramdhaan, Khumal, Hansraj, Makwanpur, Jadan and Lame are planted in this area. According to Krishi Gyan Kendra Gulmi, there are irrigation facilities in an area of 3,626 hectares. Irrigation facilities are not sufficient in the rest of the fields.
