Three solar power plants of 9.4 megawatts are being constructed with German assistance

What you should know

With the help of the German government, 9.4 megawatts of solar energy will be produced. For this, the construction of 3 solar power generation centers has been started simultaneously. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, it will be done at solar power generation centers in Benisahar Municipality-11 Chiti Barbot Shera of Lamjung, Nawalparasi Gandak Surajpura of Lumbini and Surkhet Jupra of Karnali. Kulekhani Markhu is being studied for solar energy production.

The authority said that it is going to build a ground mounted grid connected solar power plant with a peak capacity of 1.6 MW in Lamjung, 6.8 MW in Gandak Surajpura and 2 MW in Surkhet Jupra. In Lamjung, the 70 MW Madhyamrsyangdi hydropower plant is going to be used to produce solar energy by using the vacant land. The generated energy will be connected to the substation at Benisahar Municipality-1 Udipur across the project site.

Last Friday, Executive Director of Electricity Authority, Hitendradev Shakya, Head of Development Assistance, German Embassy in Kathmandu. Benjamin Sidel, Head of Benisahar Municipality Gumansingh Aryal, Director of KFW Office for Bangladesh and Nepal Michael Sumsar and others laid the foundation stone of the 'Ground Mounted Grid Connected Solar PV Project' implemented by the German Development Bank (KFW) with the support of the German government.

The Madhyamrsyangdi hydropower project was built a decade and a half ago with 80 percent investment from the German donor KFW and 20 percent investment from the Electricity Authority. Now a solar energy production center is going to be built with the help of KFLW.  The

project will have technical support from German consulting firm Gopa Tech. The Indian company Progel Green Energy Limited has taken charge of the construction. The construction company will do the entire project design, equipment supply, connection, quality and construction of related transmission lines. Besides, 5 years of operation and maintenance of the solar center and 2 years of responsibility period will be taken by the construction company.

This project was signed on February 6, 2025 (2081 Magh 24) and the contract will come into force on June 13, 2025 (2082 May 13) and will end on February 13, 2026 (2082 February 1), said Prakash Raut, the head of the project. He said that 9.4 megawatts of electricity will be produced by February 1.

Kulekhani Markh is still under study. According to him, studies have been carried out so that 3 to 4 megawatts can be produced. It is projected that 800,000 euros will be invested by the German government for all four solar energy centers and about 30 percent of Nepal's investment will be around 300,000 euros.

Head of Development Assistance of German Embassy Kathmandu who is happy to share in Nepal's energy development. Benjamin says. The Bangladesh and Nepal Director of KFW Office, Michael pointed out that the development of solar energy will help the development of Nepal more and there is no option to complete it on time.

Bansisahar Municipality Head Gumansingh Aryal said that alternative energy can be emphasized instead of hydropower projects. This project will ensure the supply of clean energy while promoting environment-friendly and renewable energy, said Shakya, Executive Director of the Electricity Authority. Shakya, the executive director of the Electricity Authority, expressed his gratitude for the grant support of the German government.
