Even in the 7 years since the work started for the upgrading of the Butwal-Narayangadh road, only 70 percent of the work has been completed. Commuters are forced to suffer on the roads as the construction company does not work on time. The government is preparing to extend the deadline for the fourth time after the work was not completed even in the third time extension.
According to the contract agreement, this highway 079 should be completed by July. But the work is not finished yet. The government is going to extend the deadline for one more year.
According to Chudaraj Dhakal, chief engineer of the project directorate looking at this road, an agreement will be reached next Wednesday to extend the road upgradation period (time period) by one year.
Next Wednesday between the road department and the Chinese contractor company China State Engineering Corporation, it has been confirmed that the deadline will be extended until July 083 by a written agreement in the ministry.
The Chinese contractor is adamant that the deadline should be met by next January. Dhakal said that the time required by the contractor could not be given. Dhakal informed that the cost will not increase even if the period of construction of the road, which the contractor has not worked on, is increased.
The Chinese contractor company, which started the construction of 113 kilometers of Butwal-Narayangadh road section, has completed only 70 percent of the work till Friday. One hundred and thirteen kilometers of road construction work is being divided into two sections to make it easier.
Out of 113 kilometers of roads, 100 kilometers of roads have been blackened by mid-June. On both sides, only 80 km of the road is paved.
Out of the 14 km road section of Downne, only 3 km road towards West Bardghat has been paved. The condition of the 11 km road between Bardghat in West Nawalparasi and Dumkiwas in East Nawalparasi under the Butwal Narayangadh road is still in poor condition. As it happens in normal rains, there is a jam for hours.
The project director Dhakal claimed that the highway will be paved before next December. The construction work of Butwal-Narayangadh road, which is being constructed in the market area of East West Nawalparasi and Rupandehi with 6 lanes, 4 lanes in the forest and 3 lanes in Downe, has been contracted by a Chinese contractor for 17 billion.
