Bhotekoshi floods halt construction of 350 MW hydropower project

The construction of a hydroelectric project with a capacity of over 350 megawatts has been halted due to the floods that hit Bhotekoshi on Tuesday. The Independent Power Producers Association of Nepal (IPPAN) has stated that the production of a hydroelectric project equivalent to 250 megawatts has been stopped due to the floods.

"The production of around 250 MW of hydropower projects operating due to the floods has been stopped and the construction work of projects with a capacity of more than 350 MW has been stopped, causing huge physical and financial losses to those projects," said a statement issued by IPPAN.

According to IPPAN, the production of 111 MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower, 60 MW Trishuli 3A Hydropower, 25 MW Trishuli Hydropower Center, 22 MW Chilime Hydropower, 14 MW Upper Mailung, 14 MW Devighat Hydropower Project and 5 MW Mailung Khola Hydropower has been stopped. Of these, the production has been stopped due to damage to the Trishuli 3B Hub Substation, which supplies electricity to Mailung, Upper Mailung, Devighat and Trishuli Hydropower Centers.

'Except Devighat, Trishuli and Trishuli 3A, all other hydropower projects are projects built with the participation of the private sector, while all projects under construction are hydropower projects being built under the leadership of the private sector,' IPPAN's statement stated.

Among the projects under construction, the construction work of the 216 MW Upper Trishuli 1, 100 MW Super Trishuli, and 37 MW Trishuli 3B hydropower projects has also been stopped due to flood damage.

Due to damage to the Trishuli 3B hub substation and transmission line, which transmits electricity along the Trishuli River corridor, the electricity generated will not be produced and transmitted for the next few days, resulting in a production loss of crores of rupees every day, IPPAN stated.
