Billionaire Elon Musk's satellite-broadband service provider company, Starlink, has received permission for commercial operations in India. Starlink, which has been trying for a long time to expand its services in India, has finally received approval from the Indian regulator, according to the Indian media.
According to the Times of India, Starlink, as the third company to provide satellite-based Internet services in India, received approval from the Department of Telecommunications of India on June 6 to operate the service . Earlier, Bharti Airtel's OneBev and Reliance Jio's satellite service provider units got such licences. Project Kuiper, launched by Jeff Bezos' company Amazon, also wants to acquire a satellite-internet service provider license in India.
It is mentioned in the news of Business Standard that Starlink has set a monthly fee of 3,000 Indian rupees and is preparing to start the service. Customers will have to pay a one-time cost of 33,000 baht for the receiver kit. According to the NDT report, Starlink aims to launch services in India within the next 12 months.
While the dispute with President Donald Trump is creating confusion in SpaceX's $22 billion contract and space programs, the approval to expand services in India is positive news for Musk, according to Reuters. Last In a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the US in February, Musk discussed the plan to operate Starlink in India.
Starlink, which has been waiting for a license to start commercial services in India since 2022, initially faced resistance from local service providers . However, it was only last March that Jio and Bharti Airtel, in partnership with Musk, agreed to carry Starlink devices in their retail stores. In internet service, these companies will compete with Starlink.
Although Starlink has currently received permission to operate the service, more procedures are still pending. Now the company will have to get a separate license from India's space regulatory body and its process is also in the final stage, according to Reuters.
Starlink will now have to get the required spectrum (frequency) from the Department of Telecom after the recommendation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. According to the news of The Hindu, the regulatory body has said that the spectrum will be provided for trial within 15/20 days if the company submits an application. The company will be able to speed up its commercial expansion only after proving that the security standards agreed with the government have been met through testing from the preparation of the physical infrastructure.
