Ahead of the budget, 32 new vehicles entered the Birganj border in a single day, the import of liquor and vehicles was high.

Before the federal government announced the budget for 2082/083 on Thursday, both of these items were imported in significant quantities from Birgunj, the country's main port where vehicles and alcohol are imported.

There has been a lot of import of new vehicles from Birgunj customs point and prepared liquor from Sirsia dry port point. The importers have done this by anticipating that the government will increase the customs duty and excise duty on the import of both items from the budget. 1 hundred and 54 bus truck chassis, electric cars/jeeps and fuel-powered jeeps, cars, vans have been imported from Birganj customs checkpoint till Wednesday 14th June.

Rajendra Dhungana, Chief Customs Officer of Birganj Customs Office, said that 32 such vehicles passed the inspection in just one day on Wednesday. He said that since the beginning of May, only 6/7 new vehicles pass inspection on a normal day. "Often, this trend repeats every year before the federal government's budget," he said, "this year too, the same has happened."

The main role of the revenue collected by the Birganj Customs is the revenue collected from the import of vehicles. He said that after the increase in the import of vehicles, there will be some improvement in revenue collection in May. Birgunj is the main gateway of the country through which vehicles manufactured in India and imported from third countries enter. Geographically, they prefer to import vehicles through this port due to its close proximity to Kolkata port and the short distance from Birganj's capital, Kathmandu.

From June 9 to Wednesday, 92 thousand 600 liters of prepared liquor have been imported from Sirsia Dry Port in 6 days. The customs office at the port has collected a revenue of Rs.

Alcohol is at the forefront of the list of items that contribute more to the customs revenue collection. Dhan Bahadur Baruwal, Chief Customs Officer of the Customs Office, says that the imported alcohol includes beer, wine, whiskey/vodka. Liquor imported through this channel is imported by ship to Kolkata port and from there by rail. Importers prefer this channel to import alcohol from third countries as it is cheaper to import by rail and the damage is also reduced. 15 million to 25 million rupees when 1 container of whiskey is imported and 1 container of wine is imported  Revenue is collected up to 70/80 lakh rupees.

In Nepal, more brands of whiskey are imported from Scotland such as Janiwakar, Vat 69, Teachers, Jimbeam from America, Sivas Regal from the UK. Whiskey is subject to excise duty, customs duty based on its percentage of alcohol content (under proof). Apart from that, value added tax is also charged.
