Gandak hydropower plant located in Pratappur Rural Municipality-7, Guthi Suryapura of West Nawalparasi has completely stopped power generation.
According to Pitambar Bhusal, the head of the hydropower center, the production work of the center has been closed for one and a half months. The production was interrupted after India blocked the water of Gandak canal flowing from Triveni in Vinayi Triveni Rural Municipality of East Nawalparasi.
Bhusal informed that the production stopped after the water stopped coming in the canal from last February 26. It is said that India is carrying out cleaning and maintenance work by shutting down the canal.
According to the Nepal-India Gandak Agreement, this hydroelectric power station built by India in 1979 was handed over to Nepal on August 31, 1981. The canal operation and control of this center, which is about 44 years old, is under the responsibility of the Gorakhpur Irrigation Department in Uttar Pradesh, India.
According to Bhusal, the Indian side has been closing the canal twice every year in Kartik - November and Chait - Baisakh, due to which the production is interrupted and there is a daily loss of seven to eight lakh rupees.
This 15 megawatt power plant is currently producing only four to four and a half megawatts. Out of the three turbines, only two turbines are operational and one turbine is damaged. Chief Bhusal said that since the electrical equipment in the center is of old technology, it is necessary to change it and improve it.
