Due to the inability to make economic activities viable, the brick industry has started to close down. Less than half of the industries that have come into operation are producing. Industrialists are running into losses as the bricks produced cannot be sold.
Shankar Bahadur Chand, president of the Nepal Brick Industry Federation, said that economic recession is the main reason. He said that out of the 95 brick kilns in the valley, less than 50 percent are operational. He said, "Only 40 brick kilns are running". Even those that have run have not run at full capacity.'
Sabin Gaianju, a brick trader, said that the business of bricks has declined after the covid epidemic. He said that before covid, the business was between 50 to 60 lakh rupees, but after that it decreased by half. Keshav Thapa, an employee of Bhaktapur Brick and Tile Industry, which manufactures Chinese bricks in Jagati, said that only 30 to 40 million bricks are being produced in the factory which produces 2.5 million bricks. He said that there has not been much improvement in the business in recent times and said, 'Now, only about 40 million bricks are being sold and it is difficult to pay salaries to the workers due to the closure of one sector.'
Bhaktapur brick industrialist Durga Prasad Malla said that the number of brick industries has been continuously decreasing since the last four years. He also complained that although he expected something from the local government, he did not get any help.
Maitri Hanuman Brick Industry located in Suryavinayak Municipality-10 Bachamari has also become a victim of recession. Owner Krishna Kumar Kisi said that the crisis that started after Corona has increased now and said, "Two million bricks produced in the last three years are in stock. Now only 20 to 25 thousand bricks are sold in a month.'' Said to be piled up.
Shyam Sundar Gaiju, a businessman of Bhaktapur-based Shyam Nirman Suppliers, said that the brick business that collapsed due to the earthquake has been further weakened by Covid. He said, 'As the situation is, it is difficult to pay the workers even after a month.' He says, "Even though the government says that the brick kilns have been closed due to pollution, this is not the case." He said that recently, bricks are being made with modern technology, not because of pollution, but because the demand for bricks has decreased. He said that 5/6 million had been invested in a brick kiln and said, "So many big industries are closing due to losses."
