Birganj-based RN Enterprises, which has been prosecuted for attempting to evade revenue of Rs 3 lakh, has paid a fine of Rs 70 lakh. The Birganj Customs Office fined the firm which imported cumin from India and tried to evade customs revenue by declaring low quantity.
According to Deepak Lamichhane, Head of Birganj Customs Office, the said firm had submitted two notification letters while importing cumin from India on 3rd Baisakh. In one of them, the amount of 9,000 kilos of cumin in 300 sacks mentioned in the notification appears to be correct, but in the second notification, more than the declared amount of cumin was found.
The importing company declared 540 sacks in the second notification, but during the inspection, 700 sacks of cumin seeds were found in the vehicle. Lamichhane said that action was taken after finding 140 sacks of cumin that is 4,200 kg more than the declared quantity. He said that the truck carrying cumin seeds was 're-taken' while leaving the premises of the Integrated Security Check Post after passing the
check. "We regularly retake items that are going to pass the inspection like this," he said.
Lamichhane said that the firm had paid a fine of 70 lakh rupees and took its goods away on Sunday evening.
Customs has been adopting the red, yellow and green lane system to facilitate the import and export process. When passing the check through the green lane, the customs officer will only take the duty and issue the goods without checking the goods and documents. When passing the inspection from the yellow lane, the goods are released after studying the documents and taking the duty, while the goods in the red lane are only checked and released after taking the duty.
