The Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel has been working under police protection for a week. More than 80 armed personnel and Nepal Police have been deployed on both sides of Kathmandu and Dhading. Landslide prevention work is being done in front of the tunnel towards Dhading. Inside the tunnel, lighting, firefighting, ventilation and concrete road construction are going on.

Flyover construction has also been done by deploying the police in Kisipdi area in Balambu.

When the construction work was in the final stages, the residents of Tutipakha located in Chandragiri Municipality-2 stopped the work from March 3rd to 30th, saying that the project did not meet their demands. After repeatedly calling for talks, the project resumed the work that had been stopped under police protection through the District Administration Office, Kathmandu. Sanjay Panthi, senior divisional engineer of the Nagadhunga tunnel construction project, said that the remaining work under police protection is going on in full swing.

Locals come early in the morning and shout slogans in front of the tunnel construction site, according to the project. "Right now, the work is being done under the protection of the police," said Panthi, "more than 300 workers have been mobilized at the construction site." So far, the progress of tunnel construction is 88 percent.

"When the project was nearing completion, the work was stopped for months," said Panthi, "due to which there has been some delay in the construction." He says that now the pace of work has been increased. According to road department sources, efforts are being made to solve the problem by calling the locals. "We are ready if the locals want to solve the problem through dialogue," said a high-level employee of the department, "Many of the demands placed now have been fulfilled, some are in the process of being fulfilled."

The road department and the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport are advancing their demands for the rights of the locals, said the employee. "Therefore, the road department is always ready if you believe and come to the local negotiations," he said. The employee claims that the work is being done so that it can be organized on time.

Although it is advertised as the first vehicle-passable tunnel, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has not taken immediate steps to solve the immediate problems and complete the construction work quickly. Even before this, the government agencies did not create an environment to start the work on time after the locals obstructed the construction many times.  Locals are in a position to settle the demands that have been fulfilled

. Even after the completion of the project, the locals have put forward the provision of free drinking water as their first demand. Locals have obstructed the work by demanding proper compensation for the houses damaged due to the tunnel, guaranteeing employment to the residents of the affected areas based on their qualifications and abilities. "Some of these demands have been fulfilled, some are in the process of being fulfilled," said an engineer of the road department.

2082 Although work is being done to bring the tunnel into operation by October 2082, the project has reported that the problem has been increased by the obstacles from the locals from time to time. More than 10,000 vehicles pass through Nagadhunga road section every day. However, the construction of the tunnel started on November 4, 2076, should have been completed within 42 months. But even after 65 months, it is not over.

Initially, the project claims that the completion of the project was delayed due to Covid and later due to local obstacles. The main tunnel is 2,688 meters long and the emergency tunnel is 2,557 meters long. The Japanese company Hazma Endo Corporation is working on the construction of the tunnel.
