It has been confirmed that Gunakar Bhatt will become the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. Bhatt has already resigned as the executive director of Rashtra Bank after agreeing to make the governor at the political level. He submitted his resignation to the Permanent Governor of Rashtra Bank, Neelam Dhungana Timsina.
"I resigned after being offered to become governor by the political leadership," said Bhatt. Even though Congress-UML remained in their respective stances regarding the appointment of the new governor, in the end Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba agreed on the name of Bhatt .
Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvisubba Gurung, who is also the spokesperson of the government, said that agreement between Oli and Deuba about the new governor has been reached. The upcoming meeting of the Council of Ministers will appoint Bhatt as the governor. According to the National Bank Act, a new governor must be appointed one month before the post of governor becomes vacant. But after the appointment of a new governor was delayed even after the term of Mahaprasad Adhikari ended, the government assigned Deputy Governor Neelam Dhungana Timsina as the governor.
The Council of Ministers formed the Governor Recommendation Committee under the coordination of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel on Chait 11. Former governor Vijayanath Bhattarai and economist Vishwa Paudel are members of the committee. Even if the committee is formed, the new governor will be appointed as agreed at the highest political level.
What qualifications are needed to become a governor?
Section 20 of the Rashtra Bank Act, 2058 stipulates that the person appointed to the post of Governor should be a citizen of Nepal, should have high moral character and should have at least a master's degree in economics, banking, finance, commerce, management, public administration, statistics, mathematics or law and should have 10 years of work experience.
