The 13th edition of the National Hemza Potato Festival has started in Pokhara. Organized by Bishnupaduka Club located in Pokhara Metropolitan City-25, the festival started from Sunday with the main slogan 'Go to a beautiful place Hemja, eat delicious potato dishes: Alu one dish, many'.
Dhanraj Acharya, head of Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality, inaugurated the festival. He said that it is commendable that the festival should be done with agricultural produce at the center. He said that watermelon cultivation is possible in Pokhara and the international potential of potatoes is good. Mayor Acharya announced the plan to declare pocket areas according to production in all the wards of Pokhara.
Basudev Regmi, secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperatives, Gandaki, said that it is a tragedy that the land is formed in arable land. Mentioning that potato is the introduction of Hemja, he urged the locals to pay attention to the increase in production. On the occasion of the opening of the
festival, the farmers who kept bulls were honored. Local Vijay Ranamgar, Harikumar Pariyar and Ganga Bahadur Karki were honored with Rs 10,000 each. Linguist Mukundasharan Upadhyay was also honored for his contribution to the field of Nepali language literature, born in Hemja.
Club President Vasant Kumar Shrestha informed that potatoes can be purchased at Rs 42 per kg at the festival which will last until May 3. A hill of about 20 tons of potatoes has been built at the festival site. President Shrestha said that potatoes will be bought and sold from that mountain throughout the festival period. Currently, the price of potatoes in the market is up to 55 rupees per kg. In the
festival, there will be buying and selling of potatoes and other vegetables, sale of potato dishes, soil and plant testing, agricultural equipment exhibition and information on disease diagnosis and cultural programs related to farmers and agriculture.
