The Indian Customs Office has stopped the Nepalese goods at the border saying that there is no Bureau of Indian Standards, those trucks went to India with plywood on February 27.
34 truckloads of Nepalese plywood have been stopped at the Panitanki Customs in India for three weeks while being exported from Nepal to India. Those trucks carrying plywood for 23 days were stopped at Kakkadvittapari water tank on the east coast. On February 27, those trucks went to India with plywood.
The Indian Customs Office stopped the Nepalese goods at the border saying that there is no Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Nepali plywood worth 85 million is now stopped at the border to India, said Khem Prasain, president of the Mechi Industry and Commerce Association. BIS is the quality certificate of the Government of India. According to him, the export of plywood, cement and other products from Nepal has been affected after India imposed the rule that the imported goods must be certified by BIS.
In this process, Prasai said that even though both Nepal and India have taken initiatives to arrange the export of Nepali goods to India, they have only received assurances that it will be facilitated. We have coordinated with Nepal Government Ministry of Industry, Indian Embassy and other agencies at various stages. Even in India, we tried to pass through the Indian customs till Kolkata," said Prasain, president of the association, "but we got the answer that this is a government-to-government matter." Even after one year of tax payment, arrangements for export of goods have not been made. He says that India is obstructing not only Kakadvitta but also the plywood exported to India from other ports of Nepal.
Now it is said that India has started BIS renewal. President of Nepal Plywood Producers Association Hom Prasad Ghimire said that the BIS of some industries has been renewed and others are in the process of coming.
He said that 10 industries have received BIS and 37 industries are in the process of getting it. Regarding the plywood stopped in the water tank in India, preparations are being made to return the stopped truck to Nepal, he said.
