After receiving 75 percent subsidy, farmers have been attracted towards chaite (winter) paddy cultivation in East Nawalparasi. In the areas with irrigation facilities, the number of farmers planting chaite paddy has been increasing for the last two to three years. Farmers have been attracted to it because the yield of Chaite rice is higher than that of June-planted rice and they also get subsidies.
The farmers of Devchuli, Gaindakot, Kawasoti, Madhyabindu Municipality, Vinayi Triveni Rural Municipality of the district are now in the middle of planting paddy.
Agricultural Economist Sanjay Dhakal of Agricultural Knowledge Center Nawalpur said that chaite paddy cultivation is expanding even at the local level in hilly areas. Gyan Kendra has been giving subsidies up to 75 percent to farmers for seeds, agricultural equipment and irrigation in designated pocket areas. In the current financial year alone, there is an allocation of 10 million rupees for the expansion of Chaite Paddy.
Last year, 6,250 metric tons of rice was produced in an area of 53 hectares, and it is estimated that the area will increase by about 45 hectares in the current financial year. According to
