Customs revenue in the Far West is decreasing every year

In the seven months of the current fiscal year, only 41 percent of the annual target revenue has been collected from the customs office at Trinagar, Kailali, the main customs checkpoint in the Far West.

In the current financial year 081/82, the target of revenue collection is 11.16 billion 26 million rupees, but only 4.61 billion 43 million 2000 rupees have been collected in the seven months from July to January, according to the Customs Office.

According to Kailali Customs Office, in the collected revenue, customs duty is 1.72 billion 25 million 70 thousand, value added tax is 1.72 million 51 million 3 thousand, excise duty is 12.5 million 20 thousand and other taxes are 1.1 billion 16 million 9 thousand. Under the annual target, customs duty 4 billion 670 million 93 million 80 thousand, value added tax 3 billion 91 million 60 million 58 thousand, excise duty 29 million 30 million 1 thousand and other taxes 2 billion 27 million 41 million 91 thousand 11 billion 16 million 26 million 30 thousand have been targeted to collect revenue . The

office has set a different target for each month. Under which 74.66 percent of the revenue has been collected in the target of seven months . The customs office said that 69.33 percent of revenue was collected in July, 59.28 in August, 76.75 in October, 69.81 in October, 93.53 in November, 72.33 in January and 82.18 percent in January.

Anant Prasad Timilsina, head of Kailali Customs Office, said that the demand and consumption of consumer goods in the market has decreased and the import has also decreased, so the revenue collection has also decreased. We kept the goal ambitious. Compared to the same period of the previous years, the situation is not very depressing,' said Timilsina, the head of the office.

If the target of collecting 5 billion 62 crore 48 lakh 48 thousand revenue is taken till the end of the last financial year 080/81, it is recorded that 3 billion 65 crore 61 lakh 53 thousand was collected .

Kailali Customs has not been able to fulfill the revenue collection target for the last 5 years. Since the financial year 077/78, the annual target of revenue collection has not been fulfilled. In the fiscal year 079/80, the target of collecting annual revenue of 12.3 billion 66 million 78 thousand was collected only 8 billion 29 million 63 million 5 thousand (67.41 percent).

office head Timilsina pointed out that there is a past experience of not reaching the revenue collection target when setting the target without studying the feasibility of production and import . He said that economic activity has decreased. In the Far West, the population on the poverty index is high. Timilsina, head of the office, says that because consumption is based on the source of income, there is a decrease in imports. He also said that it is becoming difficult to meet the annual target of revenue collection due to the fact that the tradition of revenue evasion has not been reduced since the past.
