'Gravity Ropeway' closed for 6 months due to inability to repair wires

Nepal's first 'Gravity Ropeway', built a decade ago to connect Kapcheri and Ghairangdanda of Kailash rural municipality-9 Namtar of Makwanpur, has been closed for 6 months due to wire snapping. Locals are in trouble after the closure of the 'Gravity Ropeway' which runs on gravity without electricity or fuel.

The gravity ropeway, which was closed on August 14 due to a broken wire, has not been repaired . Thulimaya Rumba of Ghairangdanda said that since the cables of the ropeway could not be repaired, it was difficult to deliver the agricultural products produced by the locals to the market and take the necessary goods to the village. Although it is estimated that it will cost around 7 lakh rupees to repair the ropeway wire, the local residents complain that the ward and village council offices are not interested.

After the construction of the 1214 meter long gravity ropeway, it became easy to deliver vegetables and locally produced goods to the market and to bring home materials to Ghairang, which does not have a road network. After two hours of walking, goods can be transported in about two minutes through the ropeway, so the locals of Ghairang used to bring vegetables such as cauliflower, potato, radish, and banana to Namtar market. Kailash-9 ward president Bhuvansingh Ghalan said that vegetables worth more than two crore rupees are being sold annually from this village.

Thakursingh Rumba, Chairman of the Ropeway Consumer Committee, says that although he applied to the ward office for financial support to repair the ropeway, there was no hearing. In the past, the ropeway was contracted to operate . President Rumba said that there is a problem in repairing the contractors because they have not paid the amount to the consumer committee. Locals got the facility of transporting goods for two rupees per kg from the ropeway.

In 2071, the suspension bridge division office Kathmandu and with the cost participation of the consumer, the ropeway was constructed at a cost of 25 lakh 52 thousand rupees and was entrusted to the contractor through the consumer committee for the operation of the ropeway. Meanwhile, four-five contractors changed. In the last period, Purnaraj was a force contractor . But none of the contractors have shown the accounts to the consumer committee.

Ward president Ghalan said that there was a problem in repairing the ropeway after the contractors were out of touch after raising money. He said that when the ward office tried to operate it, there was a problem in repairing it because the consumer committee did not give it. Goods were transported by carrying two heavy loads of 80 kg from the top and 30 kg from the bottom at the same time through two heavy carrying 'carries' on the ropeway.

Goods were transported from Ghairang Danda to Namtar Kapcheri station in one minute and 55 seconds. The locals were relieved as the ropeway would bring the goods in two minutes on the way that would take two hours and the fare would be very cheap.
