Paddy worth 8.6 billion rupees has been imported through Birgunj crossing in three months. According to the data of Birgunj Customs Office, 226.2 million kilos of rice worth 8.6 billion rupees have been imported in the seven months of the current financial year. 66 crores of revenue has been collected from this.

During this period of the last financial year, 13.17 million kilos of paddy worth Rs. 4.88 billion were imported from Birgunj. After three years, as India has fully opened up its exports, Indian paddy and rice have also started to be imported in significant quantities. In the current financial year, Indian rice has started arriving from November.

India has not determined the quota for Nepal this year, said Subodh Kumar Gupta, the former president of Birganj Industry and Commerce Association and the former president of Nepal Rice, Dal, Oil Industry Association. After 3 years, India has fully opened the export of rice to Nepal and other countries.

Last year, India set a quota of 600,000 tons of rice export to Nepal. In the past, India imposed 20 percent duty on export, this year, this duty has been reduced to zero by removing this duty on rice export. In the past, due to the decline in rice production in India and the Russia-Ukraine war, India set a quota to control the export of rice to neighboring countries.

This year, Gupta said that since India has not imposed any restrictions on the export of rice, rice can be imported from all the ports of Nepal. Last year, paddy was imported only from Birgunj and Bhairahawa channels. About 20 to 2.2 million tons of rice is produced in Nepal annually. However, the annual demand for rice is 3 million tons. According to Gupta, there is no alternative to import about 8 lakh tons of paddy.

Gupta said that while importing rice from India, only 5 percent customs duty and 2.5 percent advance income tax will be charged. Amit Tiwari, Information Officer of Birgunj Customs Office, said that the import of paddy is continuing. "Even now, 80 to 100 trucks of paddy are coming in from Birgunj every day," he said.
