Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka said that a separate law related to renewable energy and energy efficiency is a priority of the government. In the learning exchange program of the Nepal Renewable Energy Program run by the Alternative Energy Promotion Center with the support of the UK government, he said that the government has prioritized the provision of a separate law regarding renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Energy Minister Khadka said that this program has helped to increase private sector investment in renewable energy projects and provide access to energy. He appreciated the contribution made by the program to make the energy system quality and reliable, the financial feasibility and sustainable operation of the renewable energy project distributed through the Sustainable Energy Challenge Fund. He said that the government has been giving special priority to the expansion of renewable energy and the adoption of energy efficiency through its policies, strategies, plans and targets.
Minister Khadka says that in the recently approved 'Energy Development Roadmap and Action Plan, 2081', Nepal has given high priority to renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean energy transformation in the national goals and international commitments on clean energy and climate change.
By the year 2035, with the goal of producing 28 thousand 500 megawatts and reaching 1 thousand 500 units of electricity consumption per person per year, he said that he has set the goal of reaching 100 percent of households within two years through off-grid solar, wind and small hydropower in places where the national grid has not reached the approved roadmap.
According to the Paris Agreement, Minister Khadka says that such programs will help to fulfill the commitment to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2045. The program, which has been implemented since 075 January, will be completed on the 18th of Chait. Dr. Narayan Prasad Adhikari, deputy executive director of the center, said that the program has worked in areas such as electrification of homes without electricity, construction of small hydropower, expansion of electric stoves, development of solar energy, and electric irrigation.
