The construction of 400 KV Lapsi Fedi substation is going on in full swing in Shankharapur Municipality-3 Bozhini, located in the eastern part of Kathmandu. Work is being done with the goal of completing the construction of the substation by next month (December 2025).
In order to bring the electricity of the hydroelectric projects built and to be built on the Tamakoshi and Sunkoshi rivers and their tributaries to the Kathmandu Valley and to supply locally, the Lapsi Phedi substation of 400/220, 220/132 and 132/11 kV levels based on Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) technology is under construction.
Despite the local problems, the construction of the substation, which started a year ago, is being completed (full phase). Lapsi Phedi substation under construction on about 172 ropani land is the biggest hub for electricity supply in Kathmandu Valley.
Some locals have been obstructing the construction of the substation for a long time, demanding that the substation should not be built in human settlements and that it should be moved to another place. During the acquisition of the land of the substation construction site, the concerned landowners agreed to the compensation and compensation and completed all the legal procedures including preliminary environmental examination (IE) and supplementary IE Among the available options, Bozhini was selected as the site for the construction of the substation. The substation is being constructed in response to the legitimate demands raised by the locals.
Under the Khimti-Bahrbise-Lapsi Phedi substation project, the construction of civil structures including the control room of the 400/220 KV Lapsi Phedi substation, the building housing the GIS equipment has been completed by 40 percent. The supply of all the equipment including power transformer, GIS, control panel in the substation has reached 80 percent. Khimti and Bahrbise substations under the project are also under construction.
Under the Tamakoshi-Kathmandu transmission line project, the construction of civil structures of 220/132 and 132/11 kV level substations has been completed 50 percent. 98 percent of equipment has been supplied. After the completion of the construction of civil structures, the connection of equipment to the substation will begin.
While monitoring the substation construction site on Wednesday, Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising instructed the project management and construction professionals to increase the manpower and complete the work within the stipulated time. "There was some delay in the construction of the substation due to local problems, but the construction progress so far is satisfactory", He said, "We are and will continue to address the legitimate demands of the local people including road repair and expansion, water supply plan, school building, playground construction, and employment for local people under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)." Under the Tamakoshi-Kathmandu 220/400 KV transmission line project, the 400 KV transmission line coming to Kathmandu from the new Khimti substation at Ramechhap through Bahrbise of Sindhupalchok will be connected to the Lapsi Phedi substation. All the towers in the Khimti-Bahrbise section have been erected under the transmission line project. Only about three kilometers of wire are left to be pulled.
Similarly, construction of only 2 of the 122 towers on the Bahrbise-Lapsi Phedi line section is left. The said towers belong to the Lapsi Phedi area. About 42 km of wire has been stretched. Nitish Paudel, project head, said that the construction of the Tamakoshi-Kathmandu transmission line is being completed with the goal of completing it by March. Under the project itself Construction of 220 KV substation has been completed in Bahrbise.
After the completion of the construction of the 400 KV transmission line built by the American aid project Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the electricity from Lapsifedi Through Ratamate of Nuwakot, the flow can be made to the new Butwal Substation located in Sunwal Municipality of Nawalparasi (Bardghat Susta West).
Substations and transmission lines are being constructed with the investment of the Nepal government and authorities and concessional loans flowed through the 'Electricity Transmission Expansion and System Improvement Project' of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
