Amarsingh Bista and Hark Bahadur Budha of Patarasi Rural Municipality-6 of the district have been invited to manage the apple orchards of the farmers of Urthu village.
At the moment, they are busy pruning apple trees in the garden, applying bodo paste, managing fertilizer and irrigation.
The responsibility of managing apples in the orchards across the village is on their shoulders . They have been working in apple garden management since last November and will work in the garden until the first week of February. "Five thousand apple trees have been pruned," Amarsingh said, "More than five thousand are yet to be pruned."
They are responsible for managing the gardens of 50 houses. After the quality of the work, they have more trust in the village than the technicians appointed by the municipality. That's why the locals of the entire village gave them jobs.
They work from 10 o'clock in the morning and it takes them three/four days to trim a large garden, while a small one can be done in one day. They take a daily wage of 1200 rupees, food is provided by the gardener. They have not taken formal knowledge about apple orchard management .
Amarsingh, who studied only up to class 8, learned this job from his father. He learned the work from digging a hole to plant apples, pouring water to rafting with his father . Her father was impressed by her love for taking care of fruit plants.
Amarsingh is known as apple technician in the village . Amar owns more than 400 apple plants. After completing his garden work in November, he started working in the village's garden from August.
The demand of Amarsingh and Hark Bahadur is not only within their village but across the entire municipality. Due to lack of time, they have not been able to go everywhere. In the past, they used to go to India every season to meet household expenses, but now they are earning a good income in the village. While working for three months, they hardly earn 50/60,000, now they earn more than 150,000 in two months in the village.
With these two months of earnings, he manages the expenses of five families for a year. The proceeds from the sale of apples and walnuts grown in their garden are spent on children's education. Pruning apple trees? What shape to make? How much to grow? He has experience that everything depends on trimming.
Hark Bahadur has also studied formally till class 12. He himself is an apple farmer . He has a garden of 300 plants, 250 of which bear fruit. But after finishing his work, he also uses his skills in the village garden as a daily wage earner.
An annual income of five lakhs is generated from the sale of apples. He is also engaged in the management of the village garden along with Amarsingh. There are 160 houses in Urthu village. They take responsibility for the garden management of more than 50 houses. The gardens of those who have gone abroad, are single and have no skills in garden management are among their priorities . Hark Bahadur, who has gained from experience, is enough to support his family of four with the income of this garden management.
They learned the skills from their father without having any technical training. Now there are no less than technicians . If there is any problem in the garden, the villagers will appeal to them. The study of apple diseases, research, fertilizer management and grafting are all done by themselves.
They also train other farmers. "When I show them to educated technicians, they speak mixed with English." Junkura villagers do not understand . We speak in the language of the village. Farmers are excited to receive training from us because they can understand everything," Hark Bahadur said. Urthu is the village that produces the most apples in the district. Every house here has a garden.
