While traveling on the Jajarkot-Dolpa road section under the Bheri Corridor, a little east from the district headquarters of Jajarkot, Kalegaon is visible. This village in Bheri municipality-1 has got a unique identity because of the farmers who are working hard on the fertile soil here. About 70 percent of the farmers in Kalegaon, where there are about 200 households, are cultivating vegetables commercially.

Even though the month is coming to an end, the cold has not subsided yet. Sometimes, even though it is bright, it has to be 9 o'clock in the morning for the sun to set. But the locals don't wait for the sun . Sadhana got up again in a hurry and started working as a shepherd and  After cleaning the house-yard, she wants to cut a heavy cabbage from the garden and bring it. This vegetable is to be sent to Surkhet today. The car is coming, she said. The work of sadhana is not going to end just yet. He will also prepare a heavy load of clothes . She said, ``I will send it in three batches . For that, we have to pack it in sacks and take it to the road.'

Every morning, a vehicle arrives in Kalegaon to carry vegetables. And like Sadhana, the farmers hastily prepared bags of vegetable tipivari sacks from the fields. As soon as the sacks of vegetables are loaded into the vehicle, the cash ends up in their hands . Sadhana, who is cultivating vegetables in an area of 8 plants, said that she earns up to 3 lakh rupees a year by selling seasonal and off-season vegetables. She said that 2 lakhs will be saved by spending on household expenses and children's education.

Savin KC is one of the many farmers toiling in the soil of Kalegaon. In foreign employment  After spending 6 years in Malaysia, he returned 2 years ago and has been hiding in this soil ever since. Savin, who is cultivating various vegetables on his land of about 9 plants, said, "I am sitting at home with my family and sweating in my own garden." It has both income and happiness.'

Sawin, who produces cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, radish, carrot etc. in winter, produces seasonal vegetables in other seasons. Savin, who says that he is earning four lakhs annually from vegetable farming, said that he will not look abroad now, and said, 'I am thinking of expanding farming by leasing other land.' Due to the suitable climate for farming, fertile land, easy availability of irrigation throughout the twelve months and the fact that the produced vegetables can be easily sold, the locals are engaged in vegetable production. Local Dumbar Regmi said, 'This place is very suitable for producing seasonal and off-season vegetables.'

Local Savina Basnet said that the vegetables produced here are exported to district headquarters Khalanga as well as neighboring districts Rukum West and Dolpa as well as Salyan and Surkhet. The demand for vegetables is increasing. We are not worried about the market,' she added, 'We have been able to eat fresh vegetables in our own garden . We are also earning income by selling it.'

Even though the old generation seems to be involved in vegetable farming, the new generation does not seem to be interested in it. Local Purnakumari Thapa laments, "We are doing agriculture with all our efforts". But the children don't agree to do this profession for many reasons.' She said that agricultural production should be more organized and modernized for this. Farmers here say that the government agencies should not skimp on providing fertilizers, seeds and other government support during the

period. Sadhana reiterates that even though government and various non-governmental organizations have invested a lot in promoting agriculture and encouraging farmers, it is not enough. She says, "We need modern agricultural materials and their knowledge-skills and from time to time skill development trainings". Let the government pay attention to this.'

Kalegaon, which is 5 km away from the headquarters Khalanga, is an important place in the district in terms of agricultural production, Deepak Rana, president of Bheri Municipality-1, said that they are working to organize it further. Our effort is to make Kalegaon a hub for agricultural production. A discussion has also been held in the executive for this. Soon we are thinking of making a plan and moving forward.'
