255,000 sticks will be consumed within the Kathmandu Valley and 170,000 outside the valley.
It is estimated that 425,000 rose sticks will be consumed on this year's Valentine's Day. According to the Floriculture Association, 255,000 sticks will be consumed within the Kathmandu Valley and 170,000 outside the valley. The 'Valentine's Week', which will begin with Rose Day on February 7, will end with Valentine's Day on February 14.
The association has stated that the consumption of roses is increasing year by year as it has been celebrated in Nepal recently. The demand for roses on this year's Valentine's Day will be met by 75 percent imported and 25 percent domestic production, said Hiramani Sharma, general secretary of the association.
Sharma said that only 10 percent of domestic roses were produced on previous Valentine's Days. 'This year, the production of roses has increased, the weather has also been favorable, this time it is estimated that 25 percent of the demand for roses will be met by domestic production,' he said. The association's general secretary Hiramani Sharma said that the demand for roses has increased this year due to the favorable weather along with the domestic production.
The association has stated that the demand for roses is expected to increase by 15 to 20 percent every year. 'It is estimated that there will be a turnover of Rs 46.7 million during the week of Valentine's Day,' said a statement issued by the association. The association estimates that the turnover will be between Rs 90 and Rs 120 per rose. The association also stated that 412,000 rose sticks were consumed on Valentine's Day last year.
Roses are produced in Nepal only when the weather is favorable. The association stated that there is a situation where rose production has to be imported from India due to the cold weather on the occasion of Valentine's Day in February. 'It is cold in Nepal in Magh/Phalgun, rose flowers do not bloom, so domestic production is low,' Sharma said. 'This year, domestic production will increase as it is sunny compared to other years.'
The association also stated that there is a demand for 10,000 rose sticks per day in Nepal on normal days except for festivals. 'Due to the Covid pandemic, flower production had declined until 2079,' the statement said. 'Nowadays, businessmen have started investing.' That is also why domestic rose production has increased.'
Commercial rose cultivation is carried out in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Kavrepalanchok and Rupandehi, while commercial rose cultivation is also expanding in other districts.
