With only seven months left for the third time extension, the contractor has accelerated the work of the Narayangadh-Butwal road extension project. The Chinese company China State Corporation, which has not worked for four months after the extension of the deadline, is now accelerating the work towards both the eastern and western sections.
Black sheeting, culvert construction and mountain cutting in Daunne are being done. The Narayangadh-Butwal Road Extension Project Office has informed that the road expansion is currently being done at the fastest pace since the road expansion started 6 years ago. Engineer Shiv Khanal, the information officer of the project's eastern section, said that black paper has been prepared at 16 locations from Gandakot to Downe in the eastern section.
"After the road department gave the last warning and gave strict instructions to work according to the target every month, the contractor has accelerated the work," Khanal said, "In the next month, the progress of the work will be seen in a way that the passengers will feel. This is the speed of work so far.'
In the western section, black paper is being prepared in Sunwal, Bhumhi, Bardghat and Rupandehi areas of West Nawalparasi. The consultant Korean company has sent a warning letter (notice to correct) to the contractor and stipulated that 70 percent of the road should be blacked on one side by November 25 and all blacked on one side of the 116 km from Narayangadh to Butwal by March 17.
Although the condition of having 70 percent black paper by November 25 has not been met, the project office hopes to complete the target by March as the work has intensified. So far, 54 percent work has been done in both sections. The highway expansion work started on Chait 8, 2075 should be completed by July 22, 2079. The deadline was extended until July 11, 2080 for the first time due to Corona infection and lack of construction materials.
After the work did not pick up on the first extended deadline, it was extended for a second time until July 8, 2081. After the work was not completed for the second time, the deadline has been extended for the third time till July 8, 2082.
The contract was signed by dividing the 114 km road into 2 sections. The work is being done by dividing the 65 km from Gaindakot to Downe in Nawalpur into 'A' section and the 49 km from Downe to Butwal into 'B' section. The expansion of the highway is continuing at a cost of 16 billion 995 million with the loan assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
