Bagchaur transformed by commercial orange farming

Bharatnath Yogi of Bagchaur Municipality-9 Dangigaon has been cultivating oranges since 2044. He planted 1,000 trees on 45 acres of land near his house and was earning 27/28 lakhs annually by selling oranges.

He claims to have sold oranges worth 35 lakhs last year. He aims to sell more than 35 lakh worth of oranges this year. He is a 'millionaire farmer' who produces the most oranges in the district.

57-year-old Girdal Dangi, who has cultivated oranges commercially on 28 plantations since 2042, sold oranges worth 1.8 million last year from the orchard. This year, he has awarded the contract to the contractor for 2.2 million. He has been earning 18 to 20 lakhs per year by selling oranges and has taken care of a family of 12 people and has added real estate in Dang.

Not only these two, Kotmaula of Bagchaur municipality in the district is considered a pocket area of orange production. The main occupation of farmers here is orange cultivation. More than 500 locals are engaged in orange production business by making gardens in their homes. A family has been earning between 15 to 35 lakhs by selling oranges.

Not only that, they have been exporting oranges worth more than 12 crores from Kotmoula. After starting commercial orange cultivation in Pakho land where corn and wheat crops are grown, the face of Kotmaula residents has changed along with the economic status of the settlement.

All the farmers of Kotmoula, who have been engaged in orange cultivation since the fiscal year 2043/44 and commercially since 2050, were always forced to go to Kalapahad in India for labor when they could not eat from the food crops for twelve months. They, who used to work as laborers and take out loans from moneylenders to meet their household expenses, now have jobs at home when they have trouble making ends meet.

After starting to bring in lakhs of money every year, they have not only given employment to others, but have also given them real estate and higher education for their children. Farmers who were looking for work in the past are now able to employ four to five people.

Orange farmer Bharatnath Yogi said that orange farming has changed the face of not only him but also the slum dwellers. Chief Ramprasad Pulami, who came to Agriculture Development Office in Salyan in 2044, informed that it is a good place for orange production and he encouraged to plant oranges.

'After being encouraged by Pulami, I was working in the health office and planted oranges brought from Shimla in the home crop field. The father had plucked the oranges and threw them away saying that they would starve. I brought the same plants and planted them and kept adding. Now the results have come," he said, "with the salary from the job, the house expenses would have been fine. I have easily educated my children with the income earned by selling oranges. I have attached land. I have given employment to 10 to 12 people. I have invested some money in business.

Lok Bahadur Dangi, the leader of CPN Samajwadi Party, said that he is doing business with the money earned and selling oranges that have been fixed in the village and earning up to 20 lakhs annually. He said that the money earned from the oranges paid off the debts incurred in the past.

'In the past, due to the problem of unemployment, I also went to different places in India for work. I returned to politics from there. Even now I am cultivating oranges along with politics. All the problems of the house have been solved with the money earned every year, he said.

Yagya Bahadur Dangi, Ward President of Bagchaur Municipality-9, said that after Kotmaula residents started commercial orange farming, the living standards of all have improved a lot. He said that with the money earned from the oranges, every farmer has added a lot of wealth, and he has made his house tidy. Local farmers who built orange gardens in their homes have also given employment to others in the settlement. He says that farmers are facing problems due to the outbreak of various diseases in recent times.

The information officer of Agricultural Development Office Salyan, Ishwarinarayan Gharti, said that while farmers across the district cultivated oranges on more than 1,800 hectares, farmers planted oranges on only 500 hectares in Kotmoula of Bagchaur municipality. He said that oranges worth 120 million were exported from Kotmoula of Bagchaur municipality till last year and this year it is expected to reach 150 million due to good production.
