One of the old roads connecting Kathmandu-Hetaunda is the Kanti Highway. Now the condition of this highway is pathetic. As many vehicles have moved. Everywhere you look, there are landslides. Somewhere the road has been taken away by the landslide. Cargo carriers, passengers and private vehicles are passing through this section amid danger and fear.

Tankers carrying dairy products, vehicles carrying chicken and vegetables also enter the capital through this route. It is a two lane road. About two kilometers of the road is still one lane, including the section where the mountain cutting is not possible.

The distance of this road, which started in 2013 and was opened in 2016 under the leadership of the Nepali Army, is 65 km. At present, landslides have occurred in more than two dozen places towards Lalitpur alone. The road has been narrowed due to landslides. The landslide on the road has not been cleared yet. As many landslides have been removed and the means of transport have been operated. 

The most landslides towards Makwanpur have fallen in the section within the Baaiya rural municipality area, where landslides have fallen in more than a dozen places. The road has been made easier by removing landslides. Dharmaraj Lamichhane, chairman of Bakaiya rural municipality, says that although this is the easiest route to reach Kathmandu from Hetaunda, the government has neglected to improve it. 

"Many times, the road department and the ministry get the answer that they don't have the budget to improve the road," Lamichhane said.

But he complains that this road is being heckled. "Hetaunda can be reached in three hours to three and a half hours from Kathmandu, this route touches Bakia, Bhimfedi and Makwanpurgarhi Rural Municipality of Makwanpur and Hetaunda sub-metropolitan city." 

The flood that occurred last October caused more damage to this road. Ratnalakshmi Bajracharya, head of the Kanti Highway Road Planning Office, said that while the multi-year contract process was being carried forward in the current financial year, the flood in October had caused great damage. "Before the flood, there was still 4 km of black paving in Lalitpur and Makwanpur," he said.

According to Bajracharya, despite requesting the budget from the Ministry of Finance through the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the budget has not yet been received. "We asked for about 55 crores for this year, but it has not come yet," she said, "it is estimated that it will cost more than two billion rupees to restore the entire road." "It is understood that the file has been returned from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority under the Ministry of Home Affairs," she said, "but everything is stuck in budget management, no more work has been done." 

Bajracharya said that under the regular process, the agreement of the multi-year contract was obtained from Artha and the contract process will be started by the end of January. "From Tikabhairav ​​in Lalitpur to Tinpane, many roads have been damaged. A study has been done by this office, and the report has not yet arrived," she said. It is planned to start the contract process by the second week of January and start the construction by the first week of March.

The flood washed away the bridge. Now the river has been crossed and the Beilibridge has been built. The contract for the construction of the bridge has already been awarded at this place. "Three meters below the existing bridge, a concrete bridge was under contract. The flood also damaged it," said Bajracharya.

According to Bajracharya, if the bridge cannot be built due to lack of budget, the work will be started by awarding the contract for the Belybridge within January. "After clearing the landslide towards Makwanpur, the road was not damaged, in Lalitpur section, the road itself was taken away by the landslide," she said, "There is such a problem on more than four km of the road." Physical Secretary Keshav Kumar Sharma said that the ministry is preparing the budget.

"This road is necessary," he said, "We will maintain it accordingly." The distance from Satdobato in Lalitpur to Buddhachowk in Hetaunda is 91 km. In the Chapagaon section, the road is narrow and there is a problem of daily traffic jams.
