Nepal weak in South Asia in providing electronic services

The situation of Nepal has improved this year in the e-governance development index published by the United Nations every two years. Out of a total of 193 countries, in the year 2024, Nepal has achieved the 119th position in electronic governance with 0.5781 points.

Earlier, Nepal, which was ranked 125th in 2022, has improved by 6 points.

Among the South Asian countries, Nepal seems to be in a weak state in providing electronic services. A United Nations study report has pointed out that Nepal's electrical service delivery is poorer than other countries except Afghanistan and Pakistan in this area.

India ranks 62nd, Maldives 94th, Sri Lanka 98th, Bangladesh 100th, Bhutan 103rd, Nepal 119th, Pakistan 136th and Afghanistan 188th.

In the electronic governance development index, the United Nations has evaluated the use of information and communication technology in public service delivery of countries around the world. It has three main bases. It is mentioned in the report that digital governance will be measured by analyzing the services provided by government offices online, telecommunication infrastructure and skilled manpower.

The United Nations recently released the 'E-Government Survey 2024' report and said that since 2022 Bangladesh, Bhutan, Rwanda, Nepal, Cambodia and Zambia among the less developed countries are leading in digital development. It is also mentioned that Nepal, Rwanda and Zambia face additional challenges in expanding digital services as they are landlocked countries. Although Nepal's position in the

index has risen, Nepal seems to be lagging behind in terms of making sufficient use of digital technology in public service delivery. Nepal's position of 152nd in the 'E-Participation Index', which evaluates the context of providing services to citizens online, shows that the challenge is still there.

In the year 2018, Nepal got the highest number of points and the highest position in the e-Government Development Index. At that time, Nepal's position was 117th.

During the earthquake, damage assessment was done using digital technology including drones. Then, in 2020, Nepal dropped 15 points and reached the 132nd position, and in 2022, it improved again and came to the 125th position. Digital initiatives like Digital Nepal Framework, Citizen App were highlighted in the report at that time.

Although Nepal's ranking has improved this year, the fact that the e-governance score is lower than the global average score (0.6382) shows that more initiatives are needed. According to a study by the United Nations, Denmark is the most exemplary country in the world in providing electronic services. At the bottom of this index is Somalia. is.
