A group of Nepali students has received the 'People's Choice Award' in the 'Tech for Good' competition held in China recently. Huawei Nepal held a program and handed over the award to the winning students on Saturday, which was won by Nepali students in a competition held between 19 countries in the city of Shenzhen, China.
Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvisubba Gurung handed over the award at the Huawei Tower in Hattisar. The group of winning students includes Priyansu Sharma, Angelina Ghimire, Samriddhi Karki, Sadhana Panthi, Ashish Karki, Samip Aryal, who are studying Computer Science, Engineering and other subjects in educational institutions including Kathmandu University, Pulchok Engineering Campus.
The Nepali group Tech for Good won the Public Choice Award after pitching an idea for an AI-based device to identify complications in pregnancy as soon as possible called UltraCare . "I think we have won the award because it is a device that addresses the social problems of the rural areas," Angelina said, "The biggest achievement than winning the award was the exposure we got there." In the
program, Minister of Communication Gurung opined that initiatives like Seed for the Future are important to make students self-reliant. He said that the government has adopted the transformative aspect of information technology. Jim Huang, head of Huawei Nepal, said that in the Seed for the Future program, which was started in 2018, students are selected keeping inclusivity and diversity in mind.
