Nepal Rastra Bank has fixed the exchange rate of one US dollar at 136.14 rupees (selling rate) for Wednesday. This is the highest ever.
In recent weeks, the Nepalese rupee has been continuously weakening against the US dollar. That is why the dollar exchange rate is making new records every day.
Last Monday, the exchange rate of one US dollar was Rs 135.97. According to Rastra Bank, it increased to 136.09 rupees on Tuesday and further increased to 136.14 rupees on Wednesday. For Wednesday, the purchase price of one US dollar is fixed at 135.54 rupees.
According to Rashtra Bank, the Nepali rupee has depreciated by 1.02 percent against the US dollar at the end of November. During the same period last year, the Nepalese rupee was depreciated by 1.18 percent. At the end of last November, the purchase exchange rate of one US dollar reached 134.74 rupees. At the end of last June, the exchange rate was 133.36 rupees.
Whether the value of the US dollar increases or decreases, it does not have a direct impact on the Nepali rupee. But the fluctuations in the value of the dollar directly affect the Indian currency (Bharu) and the Nepali currency becomes stronger or weaker due to its impact. There is a fixed exchange rate between Nehru and Bharu. A large part of Nepal's total foreign trade is dependent on India. Therefore, when the exchange rate of Bharu falls, Nehru is also affected.
By 8:30 pm (Nepali time) on Tuesday, the exchange rate of one US dollar has reached 84.91 baht. Baru has also been depreciating against the dollar for the past few weeks. In recent days, the demand for dollars in the world market has increased, so the price has also increased. With the US Republican leader Donald Trump becoming the president, the US dollar continues to rise.
Trump mentioned in his election manifesto that the US dollar will be developed again as a reserve currency. Investors are attracted to the dollar because he was elected president again, experts say. According to experts, depending on what kind of policy Trump takes on the dollar after assuming the office of the president next January, its price will definitely increase or decrease.
Nepal also benefits when the dollar becomes stronger. In the current situation, the most benefit lies in remittance inflows. When the dollar is strong, on the one hand, the remittance inflow (amount of money coming into the country) increases, and on the other hand, the number of remittance senders also increases. Nepalis abroad send large amounts of remittances as they benefit when the dollar rises. A strong dollar also has a positive impact on foreign direct investment (FDI).
Improvements in remittances and FDI will go a long way in keeping the country's balance of payments in surplus. Experts say that one of the reasons why remittances are increasing now is the strengthening of the US dollar. They estimate that since October and October are the months of Dasain and Tihar, the increase in the value of the dollar has had a positive effect on the inflow of remittances to Nepal. However, there has been a decrease in the growth rate of remittances coming to Nepal last November.
Nepal could also benefit from a stronger dollar by improving tourism and exports. At present, neither the tourists have been able to increase as expected, nor is there a possibility to increase the exports. Therefore, experts say that Nepal has not benefited much from the strengthening of the dollar.
When the dollar appreciates, the biggest loss is in payments for imports of goods and services. However, since the import has not increased much in recent months, the liability to pay for it has not increased much. Similarly, when the value of the dollar increases, a lot of money has to be spent on studying abroad, traveling, and health treatment.
A lot of money has to be spent on foreign investment return, foreign investment dividend distribution etc. That is a loss for Nepal.
