Rong Rural Municipality of Ilam has started branding bitter gourd and selling it. Rong, which earlier branded Gundruk, Sisno, Besar, Honey, Tea and Amliso, recently branded Karela produced by the villagers.

``The products produced by the farmers have been started to be branded and sold in a systematic way,'' said Manikumar Syangwo (Suwas), the chairman of the rural municipality. It is packaged and sent to the market. This year, the rural municipality has prepared 200 kg of sweet bitter gourd and sent it to the market. The municipality is also building an industry to process bitter gourd and make sukuti.

'We are building an industry capable of processing up to 50,000 kilos of raw bitter gourd in one season,' President Sangwo said, 'We expect that local farmers will benefit more after the industry is built.' By soaking in hot water, it can be obtained in its original form and taste. It has helped for the production of bitter gourd in all the wards of the rural municipality. The municipality itself has been doing the work of first encouraging the farmers to grow bitter gourds and buying the grown bitter gourds themselves, branding them and delivering them to the market.

Rong has been helping farmers to market the agricultural products of that region. Cucumbers, parsley, squash, tomatoes, green vegetables, yams, oranges and other agricultural products and fruits have been produced more in Rong. But when the farmers don't get the market, the produce gets rotten.

"There is no situation where anything produced in Rong has to be rotted and thrown away or animals have to be fed by opening it," President Sangwo said, "The municipality does its best to prevent the farmers' production from going to waste."
