A study has shown that more than one-third of Nepalese expatriates in the US are involved in the technology sector. According to a study conducted by the Center for Inclusive Development Studies (IIDS), 34.7 percent of Nepali expatriates in the US are employed in the technology sector.
According to the US Census of 2020, it is estimated that there are 185,000 to 215,000 Nepali migrants in the US. A study report titled 'Nepali Migrant Dreams in the American Landscape' is being released on Monday. Its authors Arunraj Joshi, Vibhav Pradhan and Ruzel Shrestha Sneha Ghimire, Pravesh Rizal, Ashish Ghimire, Shrish Tripathi and Adit Tripathi helped in the study. In the
report, it is said that economic and social aspects of Nepalis who came to America for study, employment, immigration and other various reasons have been studied. The study also pointed out that migrant Nepalis involved in the technology sector are active in various roles such as data engineering, software engineering, digital marketing, information services, biotechnology and chemical and mechanical engineering. The annual income of expatriate Nepalis working in the
technology sector is also remarkable. According to the survey, the average annual income of women working in the technology sector is 50,000 US dollars, while the average income of men is 80,000 US dollars.
This study highlights the increasing proficiency and presence of migrant Nepalis in technology. In the second place, 16.1 percent of Nepalese are involved in the health service sector, 8.2 percent in the financial sector, 6.9 percent in education, and 6.8 percent in food and hotel services.
It is mentioned in the report that the per capita income of Nepalis living in America is 39 thousand 993 dollars and this is less than the American per capita income. In the survey conducted during the
study, it has been seen that a large part of the Nepali students studying in the US belong to the technology sector. According to the survey, 42.7 percent of Nepalese students are looking for opportunities in the technology sector. It has been found that 41.5 percent of the migrant Nepalis working in the technology sector have an income of more than 80 thousand dollars, and 17.8 percent have an income of 45 thousand to 80 thousand dollars.
Nepali female students are more active in the field of technology and health, while male students tend to be more in the field of technology. The study showed that high-income Nepalis working in the technology sector are likely to send large amounts of remittances to their families. 70.60 percent of Nepalese who earn more than 80 thousand dollars in America send 10 thousand, 20.6 percent of Nepalese send 10 thousand to 30 thousand dollars and 7 percent send 30 thousand to 50 thousand dollars remittance to Nepal. "In 2023, we estimate that US sent an estimated 1.28 billion dollars in remittances to Nepal," the report said, "This accounts for 11.6 percent of Nepal's total remittances."
There is a thick settlement of Nepalis in the states of America such as Texas, Virginia, California, Maryland, New York. Among them, 18.57 percent live in Texas, 11.59 percent in Virginia, and 8.95 percent in California. Responding to the
study, Shridhar Khatri, the former Nepalese ambassador to the US, said, 'What can be said based on the policy recommendations submitted by our embassy to the Nepal government and the agreement of a meeting with the World Bank, within the next 7 years, IT professionals in the US and the Nepal government will spend about 1 billion dollars in collaboration. It can bring investment and create about 1 million new jobs in Nepal.'
