Electrification data 2081 shows that 18 municipalities in the country are yet to receive electricity from national transmission. According to the data published by the Nepal Electricity Authority, out of a total of 753 municipalities, 539 municipalities have been fully electrified and 196 municipalities have been partially electrified.
Even in the municipalities that are yet to reach the national transmission power, there is data that locals are consuming electricity from small hydropower and solar energy.
According to the authority, there are 6 municipalities in Dolpa, 4 in Humla, 3 in Mugu, Baitadi, Bajhang, Gorkha and Manang if there is no electricity from the national transmission. According to electrification data 079, 46 municipalities were yet to receive electricity from national transmission. At that time only 90 to 100 percent electrification was done in 471 municipalities of the country. Among those who had access to electricity, 92.37 percent got electricity from the national grid and 0.14 percent from outside the grid.
According to the current data of the authority, 97 percent of the population that has access to electricity is consuming electricity from the national grid and 2 percent from small hydropower, solar energy, etc. that are outside the grid. Electricity customers including community has reached 59 lakh 35 thousand. 590 municipalities have electrified from 95 to 100 percent. 72 municipalities have electrified up to 75-95 percent, 33 up to 50-75 percent, 26 up to 25-50 percent and 32 up to 0-25 percent.
Kulman Ghising, executive director of the authority, said that the government's announcement to deliver electricity to all Nepalese homes within the current financial year is being implemented. "In the fiscal year 2072/73, the electrification status was only 58 percent, now reaching 99 percent is an important achievement, we are working according to the target of providing electricity to all Nepalese homes within the current financial year," he said, "the authority is reaching the poor slums looking for houses without electricity. Ghising said that the system is being improved and expanded for reliable and quality supply in the places reached. He informed that construction contractors have been selected and the work has started after managing the budget to supply electricity.
The authority has started work by selecting construction contractors for electrification in the hill districts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces with a concessional loan of USD 220 million from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). Executive Director Ghising also said that the government's investment and authority are going to expand access to electricity in other areas by allocating some of the profits they have earned.
Out of 7 provinces, complete electrification has been achieved in Madhesh. 99.30 percent electrification has been achieved in Koshi, 99.97 percent in Wagmati, 99.40 percent in Gandaki and 98.49 percent in Lumbini. Karnali state has the lowest electrification ie 74.38 percent only. 86.58 percent electrification has been done in Sudurpaschim Province.
Out of 77 districts, Humla is yet to reach the national transmission grid. In Humla, electricity is being supplied by small hydropower, solar energy and others. 56 districts have 95 to 100 percent electrification. 75-95% electrification in 10 districts, 50-75% in 5 districts and 25-50% in 6 districts.
Manoj Silwal, Deputy Executive Director of the Authority's Distribution and Customer Service Directorate, said that work is being done to deliver electricity to the partially electrified and yet to be electrified local levels. Out of 14 districts of Koshi province, except Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha, more than 95 percent electrification has been done. Solukhumbu has 89.04 percent and Sankhuvasabha has 93.99 percent electrification. 100% electrification has been done in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Dhankuta. 8 districts of Madhesh province have been fully electrified.
Among the 13 districts of Wagmati Pradesh, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Ramechhap, Nuwakot and Chitwan have got 100% electrification. More than 95 percent electrification has been done in the rest of the districts. Among the 11 districts of Gandaki province, 87.81 percent electrification has been done in Manang. Tanahun, Syangja, Parbat and Kaski have 100 percent electrification while the rest of the districts have more than 95 percent electrification.
Among the 12 districts of Lumbini Province, Rukum East has the least electrification ie 32.24 percent and only 85 percent in Rolpa. Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Arghakhanchi, Gulmi and Bardia have got 100 percent electrification. More than 95 percent electrification has been done in remaining districts.
Rukum West of Karnali Province has the highest electrification i.e. 95.08 percent and the lowest i.e. 31.80 percent in Mugu. 86.48% in Surkhet, 81.05% in Dailekh, 79.50% in Salyan, 49.80% in Jajarkot, 70.96% in Kalikot, 62.47% in Jumla, 42.75% in Dolpa and 32.51% in Humla.
Kanchanpur and Kailali out of 9 districts of Sudurpaschim Province have got 100% electrification. Bajura has the lowest electrification of only 33.51 percent. In Dadeldhura, 94.08%, Doti 88.04%, Achham 65.97%, Baitadi 61.73%, Bajhang 69.03% and Darchula 84.01% have been electrified.
