The price of bottled water sold in Kathmandu Valley is Rs 47 and per bottle Rs 16. The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has fixed the maximum retail price of 20 liter jar of water and 1 liter bottle of water.
According to Chapter 3 Section 7 of the Consumer Protection Act 2075, there is a legal provision to determine the maximum retail price of goods or services to be produced and distributed by the producer, keeping the actual cost, tax and necessary profit for production, collection, processing and distribution under the prevailing law. According to the department, it has been found that various water producers have entered into agreements with hotels/restaurants/business firms and are sending the same quality, weight and quantity of water at different 'MRP' to the market.
The department has requested not to do such things and not to do such things as it is prohibited according to the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 section 16 (2) c (1) of putting different 'MRP' on the quality, weight and quantity of water and sending it to the market.
"If it is found that the above provisions are not followed, all the water producers will be informed that action will be taken according to the prevailing law," said the statement released by the department on Wednesday.
