Environment: Thinking of the future

Environment is not a new topic for anyone. Environment and climate are also used as the same meaning of environment. The land that we occupy, the water that we use daily, the source of the wind that changes every moment, the forest and the creatures that live in it are all the environment.

In this way, man himself is a part of the environment . Human society has arrived here developing its relationship with water, land, forest and animals. In essence, the combination of all the natural things around us can be understood as environment.

water-human relationship

The area covered by snow and ice in the mountains, 70 percent of the area is covered by the sea, lakes, rivers, streams, rivers, streams, lakes and rainwater. Around this water source, human civilizations, settlements and cities have been developed all over the world. Historical, cultural, social, economic and political relations and values of people and communities have been established with such water sources.

Water resources are also a basis for running our lives. The agricultural production system developed by us has proved to be a boon for irrigation systems like Kulo, Pani, Canal. Modern society's relationship with water has become stronger.

land-human relationship

Land is an important part of the environment. Land is the basis of life for terrestrial organisms and animals on earth. Land plays a role for their habitat, food, water storage and biodiversity. According to the theory of human society development, man has come from the stone age through the agricultural age to the industrial age. There has been a change in our relationship with the land and the way we use it with the development of society .

As human society entered the agricultural age, our dependence on land increased . After this, land became a very necessary tool to earn a living. In the society, our production system is developed according to the condition, texture, and fertility of the land. Along with this, the land had a direct impact on people's cultural, linguistic, religious, historical, lifestyle and clothing issues.

In the course of social development, those who own land became the ruling class. They spread roots in all structures like politics, economy, social, cultural, literature and invented a social structure that benefited them and theirs . In the same way, the people who were separated from the ownership were transformed into slaves . As a result of this in Nepal, Dalits, tribals, tribes, women are separated from land ownership.

Jungle-man relationship

Forest is another important part of the environment . Forest is also known as the breathing lungs of the society . The forest takes in carbon dioxide and gives the oxygen we need to breathe . The forest is also the food and habitat of many animals. Forest is also a source of food, grass, firewood, energy, wood, herbs, fruits for humans. In Nepal, the popular slogan 'Green forest is Nepal's wealth' is in vogue. It shows the importance and utility of forest . It is found that the importance of forest is increasing as much as the society is moving towards modernity and development. Forests also contribute significantly to reducing human-caused environmental crises.

is the result of the expansion of the relationship with the environment that we have developed from the beginning of human society to the present state. The results of the human development of water, land, forest and the relationship with the animals within it have not always been positive .

Events that have occurred due to environmental change have raised questions about the relationship with the environment developed by humans. In some cases, our relations were not limited to cooperation but reached exploitation . Drenched in the desire for development, human beings, who have commented that development and progress are the only purpose of life, considered the exploitation of the environment as normal. As the environment is related to people, water, land, forest, animals also have relationships with each other . Today, human causes seem to have a negative impact not only on us and the environment, but also on the balance between various components of the environment.

Why is environmental thinking necessary?

Man is the best creature . This is man's self-declaration . We didn't just limit it to announcements . We began to act oppressive and possessive, asserting our claim on it . We have destroyed the environment between countries and territories. We are attacking the environment to claim that we are the best . It seems that our relationship, which is running in a balanced way, is changing with the desire for modernity and is slowly moving towards exploitation. As humans have exploited labor for profit, we have also exploited the environment . Many people separate themselves from the environment rather than a part of it and see it as an object of consumption. In the name of modernity and development, man has become the owner of the environment. In this way, our balanced relationship gradually broke down . It also displaced our eco-friendly thinking, behavior and knowledge that has been going on for thousands of years.

We created a comment that people and communities who are living in relationship with the environment are underdeveloped and failed . On the contrary, let's consider the people and society that have achieved glory by exploiting the environment to be developed and successful. We call the community that lives inside the environment using education as uneducated . We say ignorant . We called it underdeveloped. And we taught them to participate in the race to make physical development and progress the goal of life. This education helped to break the relationship of man with the environment . Natural disasters such as rivers, wells, ponds, streams, rivers, agricultural systems, land and forest conditions around us and floods, landslides, temperature rise, sea level rise, too much rain and too little rain are also pointing towards an environmental crisis.

dimensions of environmental crisis

Environmental crises may seem to affect all people in the same way . However, its impact is more on the communities, castes, genders and nations that are at the bottom of the social structure . They are not left behind in the race of development and modernity. They also miss the process of mitigating and adapting to the environmental crisis. Rather than those who are guilty of causing this crisis, people who are left behind in the social structure are more likely to experience inequality and suffering. have been forced to spend .

The prevalence of environmental crisis cannot be limited to an individual, society and nation. Its disasters are seen everywhere in the world . Its issues and questions are also being raised from all over the world. Campaigns and movements to protect from such crises have arisen from all over the world. The environmental crisis is the result of the race for development and progress that started with the beginning of industrialization. Even though it is lower in quantity and results, all of us who are involved in this race are guilty of this situation. That's why we all have to create a common opinion to change our collective thinking, discussion and behavior regarding the environment. If not, it seems that the existence of the earth along with humans will be in crisis. As the cause of this crisis is man, the effort to solve it should also be from man.

Since the environment is our common subject, the solution efforts are also our common . It seems necessary to rethink our concept of development and progress today.

The complexities of modern society are many. In Nepali society, there are complications in many issues such as political, economic, gender, ethnic, class, religious, freedom, equality, social, good governance, democracy, socialism. Despite these complications, it cannot be said that if the environment does not exist, the earth will not exist along with our society. Therefore, the environment should be the focus of future thinking.

As long as man was with the environment, at that time, human actions and behavior were not on the path of environmental destruction. Therefore, there is no need to think, ponder, discuss and debate about the environmental crisis.  There are many examples of environmental conservation measures and relationships with tribal communities that are still alive. Therefore, education, debate and discussion to promote such knowledge, skills and measures to save the environment is necessary to find a place in the society . Greenhouse gas and mineral producing large industries, factories or arms manufacturing companies do not think about this matter . That is why it is our collective responsibility to make you think, think, contemplate and make practical changes about the environment .

In this context, the environmental issue is becoming a central theme in the fifth edition of Kala Sahitya Utsav organized by Readers Jhapa. There will be intensive discussion and debate on the economic, social, political, cultural, educational dimensions of the environment. It is trying to create an opportunity to understand, learn and teach from efforts, campaigns and movements to protect the environment from local to national and international levels. It is also a place to find solutions to environmental challenges and exchange experiences. Everyone is invited to Kala Sahitya Utsav at Kankarvitta, Jhapa for three days from Wednesday to promote eco-friendly practical knowledge and skills and make it a topic of debate.
