Pulchowk Campus has emerged as the winner of the Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS) Geotechnical Model Competition and NGS Youth Symposium. The model titled ‘Landslide Mitigation through Siphon Drainage System for Road Slopes’ won the first prize.

The jury found this model to be very practical and effective in reducing landslide risk in the road corridor.

In the evaluation conducted under the chairmanship of the coordinator of the jury and Superintendent Engineer of the Road Department, Soujanya Nepal, Universal Engineering and Science College came second with its model 'Smart Geotechnical Instrumentation and Early Warning System for Landslides' and Himalaya College of Engineering came second with its model 'Stability Analysis of Cut Slope in Araniko Highway, Dhulikhel, Kavre'.

The competition showcased innovative physical and conceptual models that address the challenges of infrastructure development in the complex and mountainous geography of Nepal. Models were presented on various topics such as road landslides, sinkholes, earthquake damage, foundation systems, pavement, use of geogrids, hydropower structures, flood and water management, slope stabilization and tunnel construction.

Four universities, eight engineering colleges and 11 student teams enthusiastically participated in the competition. Most of the participants were undergraduate engineering students.

The NGS Youth Symposium 2026, which was held alongside the competition, provided an excellent platform for technical exchange, professional discussions and youth participation for students and young engineers. NGS Best Master's Thesis Award winner E. Adarsh Dhakal spoke on 'Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Laterally Loaded Pile Foundation' .

Dr. Astha Bhatta from the Ministry of Energy spoke on flow dynamics and energy dissipation mechanisms in hydroelectric dam systems . Youth Coordinator E. Rajan KC spoke about the important role of geotechnical engineering in developing safe, resilient and sustainable road infrastructure in the difficult and complex geography of Nepal .

This event is organized as a major preparatory event for the upcoming International Conference Geomandu 2027 to be held on March 17-19, 2027. The main theme of Geomandu is 'Mountain Geotechnology and Infrastructure Development'.

At the event, NGS Secretary General E. Kalpana Adhikari said that the society's continuous efforts in capacity building, professional development, youth participation and international collaboration are strengthening the geotechnical community of Nepal. NGS President Prof. Dr. Indra Prasad Acharya and Conference President Dr. Mandeep Subedi said that this competition and symposium are linked to the long-term vision of Geomundo 2027. The upcoming conference will also host the 11th Asian Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference and the 1st South Asian Conference on Geotechnics for the first time in Nepal.
